Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Lincoln, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs (42-37) stole a late-inning victory from the RailCats (46-32), 2-1 on Friday night.

After the RailCats grabbed the game's first run in the top of the eighth, Lincoln's Mike Coles hit a double to right-center to score pinch-runner Pete Parise from first in the bottom of the eighth. Mike Massaro committed a throwing error on the play allowing Coles to move to third and score on David Espinosa's sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-1.

The game was a pitcher's duel between Stephen Hiscock and Moises Melendez through the first seven innings as the game was held scoreless.

In the fifth inning, RailCats manager Greg Tagert was ejected from the game for arguing a fair/foul call on a flare hit down the line by Nick Liles. The ball was ruled foul and would have put runners on the corners for the 'Cats. Instead, Liles grounded out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The RailCats had a golden opportunity to break through for offense in the top of the seventh. With one out, Cristian Guerrero singled and Drew Martinez followed with a walk against Moises Melendez.

However, Zac Mitchell popped out to the catcher and Nick Liles struck out to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.

Moises Melendez shutout the RailCats over the first seven innings in the game. Melendez took a no-decision allowing just four hits and one walk; he struck out five.

In the top of the eighth, the RailCats had runners on first and second with nobody out. Brian Kolb struck out and Ryan Babineau drew a walk to load the bases with one out. After Christian Vitters struck out the inning fell to Cristian Guerrero.

Guerrero hit a high chopper towards second and just narrowly beat the throw from David Espinosa to score Adam Klein for the game's first run. The play was so close in fact that Saltdogs Manager Kent Oberkfell was ejected from the game for arguing and reliever PJ Zocchi was ejected for arguing the same play after the inning.

That set up the Saltdogs opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. Stephen Hiscock left after getting Yasel Gomez to line out to left field with a runner on first base.

Taylor Sewitt then entered and served up Mike Coles' double into the alley and was charged with the loss by allowing an unearned run to score on Espinosa's sac fly.

Hiscock took a no-decision in his longest start of the year, he allowed one run on three hits and two walks in seven and a third innings.

The RailCats and Saltdogs continue their three-game set on Saturday night, RHP Billy Spottiswood (5-1, 3.55 ERA) will take the ball for Gary SouthShore and RHP Stephen Bougher (2-6, 4.50 ERA). Listen live on 89.1 FM The LakeShore and RailCatsBaseball.com beginning at 7:00 p.m.
