Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - The Sioux Falls Canaries took a two-run lead into the ninth inning on Friday night, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes scored three runs in the bottom half to walk off with a 6-5 victory.
After Winnipeg put two on base with nobody out in the ninth inning, Casey Haerther hit a run-scoring single to shave the lead to one run. Canaries closer Alan DeRatt (0-3) retired the next two batters, but Kevin Moesquit looped a two-strike pitch into shallow center field to score two and eke out a series-opening win. DeRatt suffered his second blown save of the year in 18 chances.
The loss spoiled a solid outing from Ben Moore, who threw eight innings and allowed three runs. He walked one and fanned six, increasing his league lead to 105 strikeouts. It is the fifth time in five seasons with the Canaries that Moore has recorded more than 100 strikeouts.
Tim Pahuta belted his league-leading 23rd home run of the year in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Pahuta is five shy of breaking the team and league record of 27, set by Brandon Sing in 2010.
Reggie Abercrombie was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Marcos Rodriguez had two hits to extend a team-best hitting streak to 12 games.
Gabe Aguilar (1-0) earned the victory in relief for Winnipeg.
The middle game of the three-game series is at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, August 10. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
