Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - Willie Glen. Anthony Iapoce. Cristian Guerrero. Tanner Townsend. Many great players have taken the field in the Gary SouthShore RailCats' 15 years on the South Shore and your opportunity to celebrate the past and see the future is right around the corner!
The RailCats start 2016 on the road against the North Division champion St. Paul Saints from May 19th - 22nd, and then head south for a three game series against the Central Division champion Sioux City Explorers May 23rd to 26th.
Opening Day for the 'Cats 15th Anniversary Season will be Friday, May 27th, beginning a three-game series with the Joplin Blasters. Opening Day will be the first of 12 explosive Fireworks shows, courtesy of Fifth Third Bank, including an Independence Day spectacular on July 4th.
"We are excited for our 15th year as Northwest Indiana's team" said RailCats General Manager Brian Lyter. "Our staff is putting together an exciting promotional calendar that's sure to make 2016 memorable."
On Wednesday, June 8th the RailCats will host a special 1:10pm game, while Youth and Senior Day returns on Wednesday, July 20th with a special 12:10PM game.
"Although winter is just beginning; this makes things a little nicer" said veteran manager Greg Tagert. "The schedule is out, players are signing......another exciting season of RailCats Baseball is on its way."
The RailCats will make two trips to the Lone Star State to face off against a new Texas foe. The Grand Prairie AirHogs and Amarillo Thunderheads, separate league members, will operate as one entity in 2016. The team will play 25 home games at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, and 25 at Potter County Memorial Stadium in Amarillo, Texas. All 11 other league members will return in their same markets.
"With 13 clubs and no interleague play, a schedule with an odd number of teams became unbalanced and difficult," American Association commissioner Miles Wolff said. "We appreciate that Southern Independent Baseball, owner of the Amarillo and Grand Prairie clubs, agreed to the league's request to operate his two teams as one in 2016. We fully expect that both teams will return in 2017 as individual entities with a full schedule in their respective markets."
The RailCats will host two special pre-season "School Day Games" for area kids on Tuesday, May 10th at 11:10am against the Schaumburg Boomers and Monday, May 16th at 11:10am against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
