SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers 2016 schedule is set and will feature 10 different opponents coming to Lewis & Clark Park for the 2016 season, which will mark the team's 24th season in Siouxland. The X's will begin their quest to defend their American Association Central Division championship at Lewis & Clark Park versus the Sioux Falls Canaries in a split series starting on Thursday, May 19th, 2016. The Explorers will play the first game in Sioux City before heading to Sioux Falls for the next three games of the series.
The American Association will operate in 2016 with a total of 12 teams in three divisions and for the first time since 2011, no interleague games against clubs from the Can-Am League will take place. The Grand Prairie AirHogs and Amarillo Thunderheads, separate league members, will operate as one entity in 2016. The team will play 25 home games at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, and 25 at Potter County Memorial Stadium in Amarillo, Texas. After a one-year hiatus, the American Association All-Star Game will return on August 2, 2016, taking place at St. Paul's CHS Field
Sioux City will remain a member of the American Association's Central Division, along with the Gary Southshore Railcats, Lincoln Saltdogs, and Kansas City T-Bones. The North Division will be comprised of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, St. Paul Saints and Sioux Falls Canaries, while the South Division is made up of the Laredo Lemurs, Wichita Wingnuts, Joplin Blasters and Texas (nickname TBD, games to be played in Grand Prairie and Amarillo Texas).
There will be 50 home games played at Lewis & Clark Park with an equal number of games to be played on the road and four teams will qualify for the playoffs - the three division winners and one wild card. The wild card will be determined by the team with the best winning percentage that does not win their respective division. Both playoff rounds will be a best of five series. The Sioux City Explorers will release their 2016 game times and promotion schedule in a future press release.
