Macon Mayhem News Release

Hoping to win their fifth straight game, the Mayhem fell behind early on Saturday night and dropped a 4-2 result against Roanoke.

Déjà vu was in store for the Mayhem, who conceded a goal to Jeff Jones in the second minute of the game for a second straight night. Jones picked up a loose puck on the inside of the right circle and shoveled a backhand shot past Andrew D'Agostini to give the Rail Yard Dawgs a 1-0 lead.

Unlike Friday night, however, the Mayhem did not have an immediate response. D'Agostini made a critical save on Roanoke leading scorer Colin Murray on a breakaway, but the Dawgs doubled their leave shortly after. Cody Dion was fed a pass in the slot at 10:20, ripping the puck through D'Agostini's five-hole to give Roanoke a 2-0 advantage.

Penalties were few and far between yet again on Saturday night, with just one minor penalty being called through the first half of the game. However, 14 minutes into the second period, Brian Rowland was assessed a penalty for holding Derek Sutliffe, giving the Mayhem a second opportunity on the power play.

Zach Urban moved the puck to Jake Trask in the right circle on a fast-developing play on the man-advantage. Trask delayed and sent a hot pass into the slot for Stathis Soumelidis. The Czech power forward redirected the puck over the blocker of Jacob Caffrey, giving the Mayhem their first goal of the game. They tied the score less than three minutes later, when Trask fed a cross-crease pass to Caleb Cameron for a one-timer which beat Caffrey cleanly.

With the building rejuvenated, the Mayhem appeared to be poised to enter the second intermission with a tie game. However, Soumelidis was penalized for slashing, and on the delayed penalty, Dillon Fox rifled a shot from the deep slot through a thick screen to beat D'Agostini and regain Roanoke's lead.

A penalty-riddled third period presented plenty of opportunities for the Mayhem to tie the game, but Caffrey held his ground and saved all five shots Macon sent his way in the closing stanza. Dion potted the puck into an open net to seal the Mayhem's fate in the final minute.

D'Agostini made 19 of a possible 22 saves in his Mayhem debut, being charged with his sixth defeat on the campaign. Caffrey earned his second professional win, stopping 23 of 25. The Mayhem will host the Fayetteville Marksmen next Friday night at the Macon Centreplex on Youth Sports Night. Puck drop is set for 7:35 pm ET.
