Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Saskatoon, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (22-22-9-2) allowed four third-period goals in a 6-3 loss to the Saskatoon Blades (27-26-2-1) at SaskTel Centre on Saturday night.
All four of Saskatoon's goals came in the final 10 minutes of the game. With the loss, the Raiders now fall two points behind Saskatoon for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, but still hold a game at hand over their rivals.
The Blades got on the board first. Michael Farren beat Ian Scott from the top of the slot with a wrist shot at 7:44 mark. Just 36 seconds later, Parker Kelly picked Evan Fiala's pocket and fired a shot past Nolan Maier to tie the game at 1-1.
Late in the period, the Blades regained their lead on the power play. Josh Paterson got lost in transition and buried a cross-ice pass to make it a 2-1 game.
In the final two minutes of the period, Kelly was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for check from behind on Kirby Dach. Mark Rubinchik came in looking for a fight after the hit and found Kody McDonald. The Lethbridge, AB product landed a barrage of shots to decisively win the tilt.
The Raiders came out strong in the second period to kill off the remainder of Kelly's penalty and turned that momentum to the offensive zone. Jordy Stallard redirected Curtis Miske's shot from the wing past Maier to tie the game midway through the frame. Five minutes later, Stallard tallied his second of the period by finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play on the power play, putting the Raiders up 3-2 after 40 minutes.
The momentum swung the other way in the third period. Bradly Goethals and Logan Christensen scored 13 seconds apart midway through the final period to give the Blades the lead. With 4:23 to play, Braylon Shmyr put the Blades up 5-3. Goethals then found the empty net to round out the scoring 6-3.
Scott stopped 24 shots in the Raiders' loss. Maier made 29 saves to pick up the win for the Blades.
It's a quick turnaround for the Raiders as they head home to face the Swift Current Broncos on Sunday afternoon at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is 4 p.m. Tickets are available at raiderhockey.com, or at the box office on Sunday morning.
