Raiders Host Wheat Kings Tuesday
February 27, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Prince Albert, SK. - It may not be "do or die" or a "must win" game tonight but you can bet that both the Wheat Kings and Raiders know the importance of tonight's Western Hockey League game in Prince Albert.
Winners of two of three games this past weekend to pull to within a single point of the third place Regina Pats in a very tight Eastern Division race, the Wheat Kings enter the game with a record of 33-24-3-2, good for 71 points.
That puts Brandon six points up on fifth place Saskatoon and eight ahead of the Raiders.
A Wheat King win tonight would put them ten ahead of Prince Albert with nine regular season games to play. A Raider win, however, would pull Prince Albert into a tie with the Blades and to within six of Brandon.
Needless to say - a classic four point game.
Like the Wheat Kings, the 26-25-9-2 Raiders are coming off back to back weekend wins and no matter what happens tonight, certainly seem to have a much more favorable March schedule than Brandon does.
During the final month of regular season play, Prince Albert will play Moose Jaw and Saskatoon twice as well as single games against Regina, Swift Current, Lethbridge, Edmonton and Calgary. Both the Oil Kings and Hitmen will qualify for post season play this year.
The Wheat Kings meanwhile will face the league leading Warriors four more times, including this Friday night at Westoba Place. Brandon will also face second place Swift Current and Saskatoon two more times as well as a home game against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Saskatoon has games against the Hurricanes, Warriors, Calgary, Edmonton and Swift Current as well as their games against the Raiders and Wheat Kings.
Tonight marks the final meeting of the season between these two clubs, with Brandon holding a 3-2-0-0 season series edge. It's also the third game between the two in the last ten days. Last weekend the teams split a home and home set.
Not only will a Brandon victory tonight go a long ways in determining the Wheat Kings' playoff fate, a win would also guarantee the WHL club a "winning" season for the fifth straight year.
In fact, Brandon has finished at or above the .500 mark during twelve of the last thirteen years.
During the 2016-17 campaign, the Wheat Kings finished 31-31-7-3 and finished fourth in the division.
Following tonight's game, the Wheat Kings will return home to host Moose Jaw on Friday night - presented by Ashley HomeStore.
Tickets to the game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
