Raiders Hand Oil Kings Second Regulation Loss, Snap 12-Game Point Streak

They say all good things must come to an end, and on Tuesday night the Edmonton Oil Kings 12-game point streak did just that.

Ozzy Wiesblatt and Spencer Moe each scored twice and added an assist to help guide the Prince Albert Raiders (12-2-3-0) to a 6-3 win over the Oil Kings (12-2-3-0) in front of 4,032 fans at Rogers Place.

Brayden Watts also played a major role with a four-point night (1G, 3A), as the Raiders took the first in the season's four-game rivalry, and first meeting of the season since the two teams clashed last season in the third round of the 2019 WHL Playoffs.

The Oil Kings picked a less than ideal time to come out with one of its more uninspired efforts of the season, as the game served as a display of the 1st and 2nd place teams in the League.

The loss resulted in just Edmonton's second regulation loss of the campaign, and ended a point streak which previously saw them sport a 10-0-2-0 record since October 2.

Todd Scott (6-2-3-0) started in goal for the Oil Kings and suffered the loss, surrendering four goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Sebastian Cossa who allowed a pair on 15 shots over 34:56 of work.

Their counterpart in goal for the Raiders was former Oil King Boston Bilous (10-1-3-0), who became the second in the WHL to 10 wins by making just 17 saves.

In fact, generating offensive chances was a tall order for the Oil Kings all night long, as the team mustered just four shots on Bilous in the first period and four in the second, before adding a dozen in the third.

The Oil Kings struggled at times to create their usual production, but they still managed to get the scoring started as Matthew Robertson drew the game's first power play then tallied its first goal - his fourth of the season - assisted by Riley Sawchuk and Jake Neighbours at 5:58.

Just over five minutes later at 11:06 the game was tied, and before the period was out the Raiders took the lead at 18:32 to send the game into the first intermission, 2-1.

Shots on goal through the opening 20 minutes of play favoured Prince Albert, 9-4.

In the second, the Raiders cushioned their lead with three more goals in the opening ten minutes, making it 5-1 Prince Albert and leading the game to a point of no return.

Following the fourth visitors goal by Ilya Usau at 5:04, Scott was replaced in goal by Cossa.

At 8:04, the Oil Kings were whistled for high sticking; a double minor to leave the team shorthanded for four minutes or less. With 1:13 gone in the first two minutes of the call the Raiders capitalized, making it 5-1 at 9:13.

The Raiders led the Oil Kings in shots after 40 minutes by a 23-8 margin.

In the third, Keagan Slaney ripped a shot from the left point - seeing-eye puck that found its way past Bilous and into the back of the net for his first career WHL goal - cutting the Raiders lead to 5-2 at 5:45.

Three minutes later Prince Albert attacked again, before Liam Keeler rounded out the game's scoring, from Ethan McIndoe and Carter Souch, at 11:24.

Final shots on goal equaled 30-20, Prince Albert.

Prince Albert was 1-for-2 on the power play while Edmonton went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Keagan Slaney (EDM) (3), Spencer Moe (PA) (2), and Ozzy Wiesblatt (PA) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.

Wyatt McLeod, Matthew Robertson and Ethan Cap each wore an "A" and skated as alternate captains to Scott Atkinson.

The Oil Kings continue their busy week when they head to Lethbridge on Friday, November 8 to take on the Hurricanes at 7:00 PM MT. They are back in action at Rogers Place the next night, Saturday, November 9 when the Oil Kings take on the Calgary Hitmen for their annual Star Wars Night at 7:00 PM MT.
