Prince Albert Raiders News Release

Regina, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (8-11-3-1) fell 4-3 to the Winnipeg ICE (17-5-1-0) on Monday evening in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre.

Spencer Moe, Justin Nachbaur, and Ozzy Wiesblatt found the back of the net for the Raiders in the loss. Eric Pearce and Reece Vitelli each had a pair of assists.

The Raiders opened the scoring on the power play. On a rush into the Winnipeg end, Vitelli put a shot on goal that was stopped by Daniel Hauser. Pearce got the puck out of the crease to a circling Wiesblatt who fired a quick shot past the ICE goaltender with 8:44 left in the opening frame for his sixth of the season.

Shortly after, Wiesblatt nearly had his second special-teams strike of the game. He stripped a member of the ICE at the offensive blueline to set up a shorthanded two-on-one rush. With Benjamin Zloty taking away the pass, Wiesblatt fired a shot that was stopped by Hauser.

Winnipeg tied it up 6:36 into the second period. Jakin Smallwood chipped a puck past the Raiders defence at the half-boards to Cole Muir, setting up a mini two-on-one for the ICE. Muir fed it over to Jackson Leppard who one-timed it into the empty side of the net to make it a 1-1 game.

The ICE nearly took the lead on a shorthanded two-on-none rush. Muir passed it over to Smallwood, but Carter Serhyenko stayed with it and made the save.

On the same power play, Serhyenko set up a rush for the Raiders. He passed it up to Matthew Culling, who made a cross-rink pass to Moe on the right wing. The Calgary product chipped it past a Winnipeg defender, recovered it, and snapped a shot past Hauser on the far side for his second of the season to put the Raiders up 2-1 with 9:31 left in the middle frame.

The Raiders doubled their lead with another power-play goal with 2:53 left in the second. Vitelli had a couple of chances on Hauser that were both stopped, but the rebound bounced to Nachbaur at the top of the slot. The overager from Cross Lake, MB fired a shot through traffic and past Hauser for his eighth of the season.

Winnipeg got back within one midway through the third. Chase Berthloet lifted a clearing attempt out of the zone that Conor Geekie was able to track down. Geekie made a forehand-backhand move and beat Serhyenko at the 9:28 mark.

Ninety seconds later, the ICE tied it with a power-play goal. Leppard dug it out of a scrum along the wall to Geekie. He found Zachary Benson with a pass into the slot who snapped a quick shot past Serhyenko to tie things up with 9:32 to play in the third.

The ICE took the lead with 4:40 to play in the third. Karter Prosofsky stepped around a Raider at the blueline and had some space. He put a shot on goal through traffic that hit a defender in front of the net and got behind Serhyenko to give Winnipeg its first lead of the game at 4-3.

The Raiders pulled Serhyenko for the extra attacker with 2:31 to play. Wiesblatt nearly tied the game with about a minute to go. His one-timer beat Hauser, but it found the post and stayed out.

Serhyenko finished the game with 25 saves in the loss. Hauser made 24 saves to pick up the win for Winnipeg.

Up next for the Raiders is their final game of the Subway Hub Centre on Wednesday night against the Swift Current Broncos. Puck drop is 8 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV.
