Conexus Game Day Preview
The last week of the regular season begins for the Saskatoon Blades (14-5-2-1), as they play host to the Moose Jaw Warriors (8-13-2-0) for the fourth and final time.
Two games remain on the docket for the blue & gold, both of which playing as the home team, and the crew should be well-rested and ready after two days off. Saskatoon has dropped four straight, on the heels of a five-game winning streak, most recently falling to the Winnipeg ICE by a 4-1 score last Friday.
The slump has put Saskatoon seven points back of the Brandon Wheat Kings for top spot in the East, and two points back of the Winnipeg ICE for second.
Over their four-game slide, the Blades have been outscored 15-5, but remain as one of the top penalty-killing squads across the WHL with an 87.7% success rate.
Meanwhile, this is the Warriors final game of the season, and it comes one day after dropped a 4-2 decision to the Swift Current Broncos. Moose Jaw enters the game on a three-game losing skid, losing seven of the last eight.
Tale of the Tape
This is the fourth and final meeting between the two clubs, with Saskatoon holding a 2-1-0-0 record over the Warriors.
Both teams have scored seven goals through the season series, with the Blades winning their most recent contest 4-2 on April 10th. Saskatoon opened the season series with a 3-1 victory on March 21st, led by a two-goal game from forward Evan Patrician.
In their second meeting on April 2nd, the Warriors handed the Blades their first regulation loss of the season by a 4-0 score, with goaltender Boston Bilous earning a 29-game shutout and the game's first star.
Last season, the upper hand belonged to the Blades, winning five of six, with their only loss coming 5-4 in overtime on October 27th.
Who to Watch
Saskatoon-product Alex Morozoff has collected the Blades only goal over the last two games, coming in the final 10 minutes of play against Winnipeg on Friday. The goal, which was unassisted, snapped a 20-game scoring drought for the forward.
Smooth-skating forward Kyle Crnkovic continues to lead the team in scoring with 27 points (8G-19A) in 22 games, however, he's riding a three-game scoring drought. Prior to his recent slump, Crnkovic has notched 13 points in the previous 8 games.
NHL draft-eligible forward Colton Dach returned on Friday after missing four games with an upper-body injury, and threw a team-high four shots on goal against Winnipeg.
COMPLETE GAME NOTES PACKAGE
Captain's Quarters
Pending WHL graduate Chase Wouters is enjoying an impressive final chapter to his storied career. The Lloydminster, AB native sits third in team scoring with 18 points (8G-10A), all while continuing to excel as one of the best faceoff artists in the WHL.
The two-time Hardest Working Blade award winner sits 2nd among centreman in the WHL with 275 faceoff wins, despite playing several fewer games than most players.
Wouters also boasts a team-leading 55.1% success rate. Hailed as one of the greatest leaders in the WHL, the career-Blade is the only player in franchise history to wear the 'C' for three consecutive years.
