Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Stockton Ports starter and new Oakland A's farmhand Daniel Mengden (3-2) authored his second straight dazzling outing on Friday night. Unfortunately for Mengden and the Ports, one swing of the bat from Brian Ragira was enough for the San Jose Giants, who earned a 1-0 win after mustering just two hits at Municipal Stadium. The loss was Stockton's sixth straight, matching a season-high.
Mengden, who set down the first 14 batters he faced on Saturday night and 15 of 17 total, retired the first 11 batters he faced on Friday and 13 of the first 14. Mengden's 11-straight on Friday was broken up by Christian Arroyo, who looped an opposite-field single to right and was stranded in the fourth.
Giants starter Jake Dunning was matching Menden's effort as he pitched around a leadoff single by Matt Chapman in the second, a one-out single by Jake Nottingham in the fourth and a pair of singles in the sixth by Branden Cogswell and Melvin Mercedes, inducing a double-play that inning off the bat of Coco Crisp.
Dunning received a no-decision, going six scoreless innings and allowing four hits while striking out six.
Mengden, meanwhile, pitched around a one-out walk in the fifth and a one-out throwing error committed by shortstop Yairo Munoz in the sixth. In the seventh, Mengden retired the first two batters which brought up Ragira, who turned on a fastball and hit a towering fly ball over the left field fence to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.
Mengden finished the seventh inning and went on to suffer the tough-luck loss, allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out five. Corey Walter pitched a perfect eighth inning for Stockton in relief of Mengden.
Ray Black (2-1) pitched one inning in relief for the Giants and tossed a perfect seventh while recording two strikeouts and notching the victory. Ian Gardeck pitched a scoreless eighth and Dan Slania (SV, 15) struck out the side in order in the ninth to notch his 15th save of the season.
Crisp, playing in his fourth game with Stockton on a Major League rehab assignment, went 0-for-4. Over the first two games of their series at San Jose, the Ports have 14 total hits with all of them being singles.
The Ports and Giants play the third game of their four-game set on Saturday at Municipal Stadium. Casey Meisner (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his California League debut for Stockton after being acquired from the New York Mets in exchange for Tyler Clippard. He'll be opposed by Giants right-hander Chase Johnson (7-3, 2.77 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. PDT.
