Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Wichita, Kan. - The Rocky Mountain Rage lost to the Wichita Thunder, 4-2, at the Kansas Coliseum. Mark Wires and Bret DeCecco scored for the Rage while four different players tallied for Wichita in the winning effort. The same two teams now travel to Broomfield Event Center to complete a two-game, home-and-home set tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Rage megaphone courtesy of Towne Place Suites.
The Thunder opened the scoring at 10:06 of the first when Ryan Lauzon picked up a rebound and darted behind the net for a wrap-around goal past Rage netminder Trevor Cunning. Rocky Mountain responded with a power play goal off the stick of Wires at 15:51 and the clubs headed to the second tied at one.
Early in the middle period, Wichita snapped a string of 24 consecutive successful penalty kills by the Rage when Daniel Tetrault took a back-door feed from Jason Duda at 3:30. Rocky Mountain appeared to have tied the game less than a minute later when Anders Strome was called for a dubious hooking penalty driving the net just as Wires was wristing what would have been his second goal of the game past Thunder goaltender Sebastien Laplante. Unbelievably, the goal was disallowed, and instead of skating tied at two, the Rage were a man down still trailing 2-1.
After Rocky Mountain denied Wichita on two power play chances early in the third, the Thunder scored twice in a span of 2:04 skating at even strength. Duda tallied the eventual game-winner off a backhand through the right circle at 5:16 before Travis Clayton chipped in a rebound at 7:20. DeCecco brought the Rage a bit closer with his second of the year at 13:15, but it was a case of too little to late.
The loss ends a two-game winning streak for Rocky Mountain, dropping the club to 5-9-2 on the year with 12 points.
