Hounds Suffer Third Straight Loss, Now Four Points Back of First
December 1, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release
Southhaven, MS - The SteelHounds entered Friday's game with a chance to take two points from the Memphis RiverKings and move into a first place tie in the Northeast Division but after taking a 2-0 lead, the Hounds surrendered four straight goals en route to a 4-3 loss at the DeSoto Civic Center. The loss drops the Hounds to 0-2 on their current eight-game road trip.
The Hounds came out smoking in the first period as Chris Shaffer would get his fifth goal of the season quickly followed by Tab Lardner's fifth goal of the season just 34 seconds later. All this coming just past the mid-way point of the opening period. The lead would not stand though as Memphis cut it to one after the first period with a Jason Sessa power play goal late in the opening frame.
Just like Tuesday night's 5-2 loss at Tulsa, only one goal would be scored in the second but this time it came from the Riverkings Tyler McGregor at 6:15 and that tied the score at two after 40 minutes of play.
In the end it would be the man advantage that proved to be the Achilles heel for Youngstown as a second power play goal (2-6) would be scored, this time by Darrell Stoddard to put the 'Kings up 3-2 and they wouldn't look back as just 27 seconds later Memphis would put in the deal breaker with Derek Campbell's goal to put Y-Town down two. Jeff Christian would score a late goal with an extra skater making it 4-3 with 30 seconds to play but in the end it was not enough to put the Hounds into first place.
The loss (8-5-4 20pts) drops Youngstown four points behind Memphis for first place in the division and with Bossier-Shreveport winning over Lubbock tonight it makes Saturday night's game in Louisiana a battle for second place as the Hounds only hold the advantage by one point over the Mudbugs.
The Hounds drop the puck at 8:05 against Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday and then at Memphis on Sunday for a 6:05pm start. All games available on ESPN 1240-The Fan and steelhounds.com.
