Sher-Wood CHL Player and Goaltender of the Month Announced
December 1, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Sher-Wood Central Hockey League Player and Goaltender of the Month for November/2006 have been determined, with Colorado center Riley Nelson earning Player of the Month honors and Memphis netminder Larry Sterling repeating as Goaltender of the Month. Nelson enjoyed a remarkable month in which the Eagles posted a 9-2-0 record, while Sterling won seven of nine contests and recorded his first shutout of the season for the RiverKings.
Nelson posted five multiple point games during November, including a season high five point outing in a 6-0 home win over Rocky Mountain on November 18th. While he didn't register a power play goal during the month, he did assist on seven scores while with the man advantage and was highly impressive in leading Colorado's penalty killing unit, scoring four shorthanded goals and setting up three others. His five total shorthanded goals leads the CHL, as does his +14 plus/minus ranking. Nelson sits third in the CHL scoring race with 25 points on the season.
Sterling becomes the first netminder awarded Goaltender of the Month on back to back occasions since Colorado's Tyler Weiman did so in December and January of the 2004-2005 season. His dependable play has the RiverKings atop the Northeast Division standings with a record of 10-3-2. His top outing of the month came November 11th on the road, shutting out Corpus Christi 4-0 with a 26 save performance. He shares the CHL wins lead of nine with Colorado's Marco Emond, and ranks third in the CHL with a goals against average of 2.32.
