Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - The Madison Mallards were defeated by the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Saturday night 7-2 in front of a sellout crowd at the "Duck Pond." The loss was the first in six games against the Rafters this season and drops the Mallards to 1-2.
Wisconsin Rapids got off to a fast start by scoring one run in the very first inning, as Aaron Mees (Oral Roberts) scored on a single by Cody Koback (Wisconsin - Stevens Point). The Rafters also scored three times in the fourth inning as Bart Steponovich (University of California - Riverside) and Garrett Nash (Oregon State) drove in runs.
The Mallards countered with two of their own in the fourth on RBI hits by Willie Argo (Illinois) and Andrew Wasmund (Madison College). Unfortunately, those two runs would be all the Mallards would get on Saturday, and the team was only able to muster two hits outside of the fourth inning.
The Rafters would add three more runs for good measure, bringing the margin of victory to five.
Augey Bill (Arizona) picked up the win for Wisconsin Rapids in his first start of the season. Bill (1-0) pitched five innings and surrendered two runs (both unearned). He gave up three of the four hits the Mallards would collect Saturday and had eight strikeouts.
Parker Schrage (Madison College) took the loss for Madison. Schrage (0-1) gave up five total runs (three earned) on five hits in six innings. He walked and struck out three hitters as well. Tom Windle (Minnesota) went the rest of the way for the Mallards, giving up two runs on four hits.
Both teams will square off again Sunday evening at the "Duck Pond" in a 5:05 p.m. contest. Mallards' All-Star Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) will make his seventh start of the season. Brad Douthit (USC) will throw for the Rafters. The game will be game two of the three-game series against Wisconsin Rapids, which will conclude Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Wisconsin Rapids.
