All-Star festivities tonight from Connecticut

The Connecticut Defenders will host the Eastern League All-Star game tonight at 7:30 PM from Dodd Stadium in Norwich. Reading's Mike Costanzo, Greg Jacobs, Jesus Merchan, Jason Hill, Matt Maloney and Chris Key will play for the Southern Division Stars. Streaky

R-Phils C Jason Hill is currently on a 20-game hitting streak, while RF Greg Jacobs is in the midst of a 13-game hitting streak. Hill's streak is the second longest in the Eastern League this season, one short of the 21-game hit streak by Binghamton's Brett Harper. During the streak, which began on 6/16, Hill is hitting .347 (26-75) with 8 2B, HR, 9 R and 19 RBI. In his last five games he is hitting .467 (7-15) with 3 2B and 3 RBI. For the season, Hill is batting .303 with 27 2B, 5 HR and 43 RBI. Jacobs is hitting .489 (22-45) during his streak with 5 2B, 3B, 4 HR and 13 RBI. He is hitting .412 (7-17) with a long ball and 7 RBI in his last five and .329 with 24 2B, 2 3B, 14 HR and 59 RBI for the season.

Veto Power

Three of the four games of the upcoming home stand will be pitched by RHP Carlos Carrasco, RHP Zack Segovia and LHP Matt Maloney. The three pitchers are a combined 5-0 this season against the Harrisburg Senators. In 34 innings of work, the three have allowed only 13 ER while striking out 34.

Winning Production

IF Jesus Merchan has 7 RBI in his last five games played. The R-Phils are 11-4 this season when Merchan has at least one run batted in. On the season, Jesus has knocked in 30 runs, including a season high six on April 21 against Akron. He is hitting .370 (20-54) with RISP and .333 (9-27) with RISP and 2 outs. His career high in RBI's is 53, which he set in 2003 with Quad City.

CF Javon Moran has stolen five bases in seven attempts since returning from the disabled list on May 26. Moran has stolen a team high 21 bases this season and the Phils are 15-3 in games in which Moran has at least one stolen base. Moran's career high for stolen bases is 50 (2004 at Lakewood and Dayton).

Hit Machine

2B Peeter Ramos has played a total of 37 games this season since joining the team on May 19. In those 37 games, Ramos has a hit in 26 of them and has 11 multi-hit games, including four three-hit games and two four-hit games. He has a hit in seven of his last eight games played and is hitting .310 for the season with 45 H, 6 HR and 21 RBI.

Thou Shall Not Steal

C Tim Gradoville has thrown out 11 of 17 (64.7%) potential base stealers this season. Last season he led Eastern League catchers by throwing out 52.9% (18-34) of base stealers.

Jumping Ahead and Staying There

The R-Phils are 30-14 this season when scoring the first run and a perfect 37-0 when leading after seven innings.

Pitching Perfection

LHP Allen Davis has thrown eight consecutive hitless, scoreless innings in which he has walked only two and struck out nine. In those three appearances, Davis, the former starter and now reliever, has made one start and recorded a three innings save, which was his first save in his eight year career. In his last 14 innings of work, Davis has allowed only 3 ER on seven hits with three walks and 14 strikeouts. He has seen his ERA drop from 6.11 to 4.76.

IF Jesus Merchan is hitting .478 (11-23) with 7 RBI in his last 10 games. 2B Peeter Ramos is hitting .448 (13-29) with 3 HR and 8 RBI in his last 10 games played. LHP Chris Key has allowed only 3 ER in his last 14.2 innings pitched (1.90 ERA) and 5 ER in his last 30.0 innings of work (1.50 ERA). LHP Matt Maloney has allowed only one walk while striking out 15 in his last 11 innings (2 starts).

On the road again

After the upcoming four game home stand against Harrisburg, the Phillies will hit the road for 10 days, which will take them to Erie for a three-game set, Akron for a four game weekend series and then to Bowie for three to finish up the trip. The last time the Phillies had a road trip of 10 days was July 27 - August 6, 2004 in which they played three in Harrisburg, three in Akron and another four back in Harrisburg. The 2004 team went 4-6 on that road trip.
