TONIGHT'S GAME: The second of a four game series and the sixth of eight meetings, the second of four at Lackawanna County Stadium. Richmond is 2-3 vs. the Red Barons, 0-1 on the road. Game one of a six game road trip. The 46th of 48 meetings vs. North Division clubs (Braves are 15-30 vs. the North) and the 22nd of 24 road contests vs. North Division clubs (Richmond is 3-18). The Braves were 3-5 vs. the Red Barons last season, 1-3 at Lackawanna County Stadium. The Braves are 332-333 all-time vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Braves are fourth in the South, 25 games behind first place Charlotte. The Red Barons are second in the North, two games off the pace.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Red Barons beat the Braves 6-1 Tuesday at Lackawanna County Stadium. Barons pitcher Scott Mathieson struck out seven in eight innings while allowing only three hits to lead the Barons to the win in the opener of a four game series. The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Chris Roberson. The Braves tied the game in the fourth when Brayan Pena chased a run home with a double. The Barons moved in front to stay in the home half on a two run home run by Brennan King. Josh Kroger doubled a run home and Michael Bourn knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to cap a four run inning and give the Barons a 5-1 lead. The Barons tacked on a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Juan Sosa. Mathieson earned his third straight win. Kevin Barry took the loss. Bourn, King, Jim Rushford, and Danny Sandoval had two hits each for the Red Barons. Brayan Pena had two of Richmond's hits.
THE CURRENT SKID: The Braves have lost three straight games and five of their last seven. The 26 games under .500 is a season low. The Braves have dropped three or more games eight times this season
THE NUMBER CRUNCH: Carlos Mendez has a six game hitting streak (8-26 .308). Martin Prado's seven game hitting streak ended last night. Tony Pena's four game hitting streak ended last night. Michael Ryan is six for his last 18. RHP Manny Acosta has earned a save in each of the Braves last five wins. He has six saves in July, tied for second best in the IL for the month. He has nine saves since joining the Braves from Double-A Mississippi and has converted his last six save opportunities. Since allowing three runs vs. Charlotte May 30, Wayne Franklin has allowed just four runs in 19 appearances over 27.3 innings (1.32 ERA). Phil Stockman has not allowed a run on the road with Richmond this season (seven appearances, 14 innings pitched on the road). Braves pitchers are 9-45 (.200) at the plate this season with a SB and one RBI. Braves pinch hitters are 4-33 (.121). Richmond is 10-12 in July. They are looking for their first full winning month since August, 2004.
BARONS BLOCKING BATS: The Braves three hits last night is their second lowest total of the season. Richmond had a season low two hits vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 2. The Braves have just five hits and one run in their last two meetings with the Barons. Richmond is hitting .175 in the season series vs. Scranton. The Braves have just 10 runs in the five meetings vs. the Red Barons.
NOT BREAD FOR TURF: The Braves are playing their second and final series of the season on artificial turf. The Braves are 1-4 on plastic this season. Richmond was 1-3 on ersatz grass at Syracuse. Richmond was 3-5 on turf last season.
NOT FAST OUT OF THE GATE: The Braves allowed another first inning run last night. They have been out-scored 83-37 in the first this season. The 83 runs is the most the Braves have allowed in an inning and the minus-56 run differential is the worst of any inning this season.
