Rochester Red Wings News Release
Alex Romero had three hits and three RBI, and Pete Munro combined with Kevin Cameron on a seven-hit outing, leading the Red Wings over the Charlotte Knights 6-1 Wednesday night at Frontier Field. It was the second straight win for Rochester (61-45) over Charlotte, the top club in the league with a 63-40 record. The International League North Division leading Red Wings maintained their two-game lead over second place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, who also won Wednesday.
Charlotte opened the scoring against Rochester starter Munro when Chris Stewart singled in a run in the top of the second. With the league's top left-handed starter Heath Phillips (12-3, 2.15 ERA coming into the game) on the mound for Charlotte, the Red Wings didn't waste any time tying the score. In the bottom of the second, Garrett Jones doubled to the right-field corner; Romero fell behind 0-1 against Phillips, then ripped a run-scoring double to right-center to plate Jones and tie the score 1-1.
After each team scored in the second, the pitcher's duel began again for the second night in a row. Between the second and sixth inning, the Knights had just one baserunner. But the Wings broke the tie in their half of the sixth, powered by Glenn Williams' line drive single to center field with one out. With Kevin West on first, Williams hit a ball that dropped fast and passed Charlotte centerfielder Jerry Owens, who was attempting to make a sliding catch. West moved to third and the Wings rally was on. Jones drove in West and moved Williams to third with a grounder up the first baseline. The next batter, Quinton McCracken, drilled a double that scored Williams and moved Jones to third. Romero was up next, and his hit to right field that scored Jones and McCracken to give the Wings a 5-1 advantage.
Cameron relieved Munro (7-10) in the seventh, after another solid effort from a Wings starter. Munro allowed just one run on five hits in six innings. Cameron got a quick out to start the inning, but two Knights singles put runners on first and second with one out. Cameron escaped the potential trouble when the Knights hit a ground ball into a double play to end the inning.
Luis Maza doubled to lead off the seventh and reached third off a Charlotte throwing error when the throw to second hit Maza's arm and deflected into the outfield. Chris Heintz hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Maza and push the Wings lead to 6-1.
Cameron picked up his sixth save with his three inning scoreless relief appearance.
NOTES: Williams and Maza each had two hits, and Jones had two hits and two runs scored... Entering Wednesday's game, the Red Wings were on pace to win 82 games this season. If Rochester can get to 82 wins, there's a good chance they'll make the playoffs. Since 1990, the International League has had 24 teams with 82 wins or more, and only one of those 24 teams has missed the playoffs (2000 Pawtucket Red Sox, 82-61 and finished in 3rd place in the IL North behind Buffalo-86 wins and Scranton-85 wins)....Tuesday night's complete-game (nine-inning) shutout by RHP Matt Garza was the third complete-game (nine-inning) shutout the Red Wings have had (all three at Frontier Field) in their last 46 games (RHP Pete Munro June 7 vs. Durham 1-0 & RHP Mike Smith July 18 vs. Syracuse 6-0). Prior to Munro's complete-game (nine-inning) shutout, Rochester hadn't had a complete-game (nine-! inning) shutout the first 489 games of the Minnesota Twins affiliation....Josh Rabe had three hits as the Twins beat Chicago 7-4 Wednesday afternoon. 10 of the Twins' 14 players who played Wednesday have also played for Rochester over the past four years...Lefty reliever Ricky Barrett (sore elbow) was placed on the DL Wednesday
