NORFOLK, Va. -- Right-hander Britt Reames and three relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as Indianapolis rolled to a 4-0 blanking of Norfolk Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Reames (5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 SO), RHP Josh Sharpless (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 SO), RHP Scott Strickland (1.0 IP, 3 SO) and RHP Jonah Bayliss (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) combined for the Tribe's 13th shutout of 2006. The season total ties the 1996 club for the most blankings in the Victory Field Era.
Reames, who was sidelined from May 12-June 29 with right elbow soreness, improved to 4-1 with his first road win since April 26.
The Indians improve to 57-45 on the season, while the Tides fall to 39-65 overall. Indianapolis increases its lead to two games over Louisville in the International League's West Division.
Indianapolis cracked the scoreboard in the third when 2B Craig Stansberry walked, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on CF Chris Duffy's single to left.
The Tribe added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. RF Adam Boeve drilled a base knock up the middle, stole second and came plateward on Stansberry's infield single in the seventh, while C Carlos Maldonado and SS Chris Truby both recorded RBI singles in the eighth.
Tides RHP Jose Lima (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 6-6.
Maldonado was the only player in either dugout to finish with more than one hit, going 2-for-4. Duffy's RBI single extended his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games.
The two teams return to Harbor Park Thursday afternoon at 12:15 p.m., for game three of the four-game series. RHP Matt Ginter is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Yusaku Iriki is expected to get the nod for Norfolk.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Thursday's pre-game show begins at 11:55 a.m.
