Columbus set out to prove once and for all who the best team in the International League West Division is in 2016.
Statement made.
Facing a 2-0 deficit after seven innings on Tuesday night at Victory Field, the Columbus Clippers (77-54) stormed back to tie the game at two in the eighth, and catcher Guillermo Quiroz crushed his 11th home run of the season, a three run shot to give his team the win in the ninth inning by a final score of 5-2 over division rival Indianapolis (64-67) in front of 7,380 fans.
The win marked the Clippers' eighth in a row.
The Tribe got on the board first, as Willy Garcia's RBI single scored Elias Diaz to make it 1-0 after two innings.
In the fifth, it was Diaz coming through this time with an RBI base hit to put his team ahead by two.
After getting stifled all night with runners in scoring position, the Clippers finally came through in the top of the eighth inning, as they loaded the bases with no outs and Yhoxian Medina and Erik Gonzalez produced RBI singles to tie the game at two before Quiroz's blast in the ninth to win it.
Columbus starter Ryan Merritt threw five and 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on nine hits while walking two and fanning three.
Indians righty Frank Duncan ended his night after six scoreless innings of work, allowing just five hits. He walked one batter and struck out two.
Perci Garner (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Clippers while Jorge Rondon (5-4) suffered the loss for the Tribe.
The Clippers and Indians will conclude their season series tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. from the Circle City. Southpaw Shawn Morimando (4-1, 2.93 ERA) is slated to throw for Columbus against righty Drew Hutchison (6-5, 3.64 ERA).
