Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Louisville Bats by a score of 8-1 thanks to an offensive outburst, which featured 18 hits, 5 off the bat of Miguel Gonzalez, and a premier pitching performance by the Hens' Donn Roach.
Box Score August 23
The former Louisville Bat, Donn Roach, brought his A game Tuesday night, as he defeated his former AAA squad en route to earning his second win in a Mud Hens uniform and leaving his ERA at 1.00. Roach managed to go seven innings allowing only four hits and one run while walking two and striking out seven. Cody Reed started for Louisville, and the hard throwing lefty went six innings allowing ten hits and two runs to earn his fourth loss of the season for the Bats.
Toledo got on the board in the fifth inning after singles to lead off the inning courtesy of Dixon Machado and Jose Iglesias were converted into runs thanks to a two-run double off the bat of Jeff McVaney.
Louisville made it 2-1 when a Roach wild pitch allowed Raffy Lopez to trot home from third in the sixth inning. However, Toledo made it 3-1 when Chad Huffman lofted a sac fly to right plating Pedro Ciriaco in the seventh.
Toledo broke things open in the top of the eighth when Dixon Machado knocked a bases loaded single to make it 4-1 Toledo, but the big hit came off the bat of Ciriaco, as he roped a bases-clearing double off the wall in left to make it 7-1 Mud Hens. A Jeff McVaney RBI single (his third RBI of the game) made it 8-1 Toledo.
Also, Miguel Gonzalez had a stupendous game at the plate, as he notched a five hit game, the first since Xavier Avery, who did it against the Bats on April 9, 2015.
Toledo will play their final game of the road trip in Louisville tomorrow evening, as first pitch will be at 7:05 PM at Louisville Slugger Field. The Wednesday night matchup will feature Toledo's RHP Warwick Saupold (5-2, 2.74 ERA) against Louisville's RHP Alfredo Simon (0-1, 6.30 ERA).
Toledo Tidbits:
Beating up the Bats- Although the Mud Hens are currently 12 games under the .500-mark, they have had plenty of success against Louisville in 2016, currently 17-6 vs. the Bats so far this season. The Hens have outscored Louisville 130-67 over those 23 games played. Only two games remain between the Hens and the Bats for the 2016 season.
Legendary Lloyd- The Hens' main man Lloyd McClendon earned the nickname, "Legendary Lloyd" for his days in the Little League World Series in 1971. McClendon, who was playing for Gary, Indiana, ripped five home runs in his first five at-bats at the LLWS, and in fact, the five at-bats with home runs were McClendon's only official plate appearances, as he recorded walks in the rest. Lloyd's Gary, Indiana team eventually won the United States Championship but eventually lost to Taiwan in the World Championship game.
Looking Ahead- The Toledo Mud Hens' 2016 season is almost to the finish line, as only 13 games remain (six at Fifth Third Field). With the win Tuesday night, the Mud Hens record goes to 60-71, and the Hens came into Tuesday's game 16 games out of first in the IL West. Toledo will return for four games beginning Thursday, August 25th. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
