Norfolk Tides News Release

Rochester used a strong start from Jason Wheeler and a big night from their offense to roll to a 6-0 win over Norfolk Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

After Norfolk's scheduled starter Joe Gunkel was scratched just before game time, the Red Wings wasted little time in jumping on spot starter Richard Rodriguez (6-2), as Kennys Vargas connected on a three-run homer in the first frame to spot Wheeler with an early lead.

The early offense was more than enough for Wheeler (11-4), who yielded just two hits over eight strong innings to give the Wings the win in the opener of the three-game set. Wheeler struck out eight and walked just one, as he faced just one batter over the minimum and did not allow a hit after the second inning. The 25-year-old southpaw threw 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes and combined with D.J. Baxendale on Rochester's 13th shutout win of the season.

Norfolk used five relievers in the contest, as Rodriguez, Jayson Aquino, Zach Phillips, Oliver Drake and Pedro Beato all appeared in the game. Phillips spun three shutout innings out of the bullpen, his 11th consecutive scoreless appearance dating back to July 24. Over that span, Phillips has held opposing batters to a .118 average (6-51) with 19 strikeouts and three walks over 15.2 scoreless innings.

Christian Walker had Norfolk's lone extra-base hit in the contest, a double in the second inning that extended his hitting streak to nine games. Over that span, Walker has batted .364 (12-33) with three home runs, six doubles and eight RBI.

Caleb Joseph, appearing in his first game with Norfolk after being optioned from Baltimore Monday, went 1-for-4 with a 9th inning single.

The Tides and Wings will continue their series Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Tyler Wilson (2-0, 4.11) is slated to start for Norfolk and will be opposed by left-hander David Hurlbut (0-1, 3.46).

Notes: Prior to Tuesday's game, right-hander Jason Stoffel was placed on Norfolk's disabled list, retro to August 20th, with a right shoulder injury...Before Tuesday's game, RHP Tyler Wilson was activated to Norfolk's roster, while RHP Scott McGough was assigned to Double-A Bowie and C Austin Wynns was transferred to Class-A Frederick...Pedro Beato worked a scoreless ninth inning, his MiLB-leading 59th appearance of the season...Dariel Álvarez went 0-for-3 with a walk, snapping his 17-game hitting streak at Harbor Park.
