Birmingham Barons News Release
The new look Birmingham Barons was ready to showcase all of their changes to the home crowd. Despite the outcome in a 3-1 loss to the Rocket City Trash Pandas, two Barons making their Regions Field debut in the 2023 season showcased what could be in the Chicago White Sox's future. Birmingham's Colson Montgomery and Edgar Quero sparked some excitement, even in a loss.
Montgomery and Quero both finished the night with one hit each but the impact those youngsters had was more than a stat sheet can show.
The Barons came into Game 1 against the Trash Pandas with a nine-game losing streak, however, the excitement around the team seemed as if those losses were wins. The duo of Montgomery and Quero currently ranks as the No. 1 and No. 2 prospects for the White Sox, respectively.
The game kicked off with a pop fly to Montgomery for an easy out and to kick off a solid start for RHP Cristian Mena. Mena sat the opposition down in four batters in the first two innings with an assist from Quero in a successful throw down to get out of the second.
The Barons also got their bats going in the second as Bryan Ramos hit a double to lead off the bottom of the second, his only hit of the night. Ramos advanced to third but was left on-base to end the inning.
The third was a little bit more of the same for the two sides, Mena escaped the top and the Barons strand a runner in scoring position. Mena gets out of the top of the third securing his third strikeout of the game and keeps the game scoreless. Birmingham in the bottom of the inning got their second and final double of the game off of Montgomery, however, he would only go as far as second base.
The Trash Pandas did not let the Barons pressure get to them as they were the one to break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Rocket City and Sonny DiChara lead off the fourth inning with a solo home run over the right field wall. The Barons did not let the momentum swing fully in the away team's direction as Quero successfully threw out his second base runner of the night. Birmingham on offense, however, had no response.
In the fifth, Mena continued his dominance as his night came to a close at the end of the inning. The right-hander finished his night with eight hits, one earned run, a home run and one walk allowed to go with his six strikeouts. Mena is now up to 116 strikeouts on the season. Despite the gift the Mena delivered on the mound, the Barons offense could not come to aid until the bottom of the sixth.
In the sixth, Quero continued his terrific night as a single scored Jose Rodriguez and tied the ballgame. The Barons protected the tie game with the help of LHP Gil Luna and his stellar 2.0 innings pitched.
Luna kicked off his tear in the seventh with one of the cleanest pickoffs moves that you will see in the Southern League. The lefty continued through the eighth as that was his final inning of work. Luna finished the night with one hit and one walk to go with his lone strikeout.
The dominance from the mound was matched by Rocket City as the two teams would be at a standstill through regulation. The Barons LHP Jonah Scolaro took the mound in the top of the 10th for his second inning of work.
Scolaro in his first inning sat down the Trash Pandas in order but the efforts would not be the same in extra innings. The left-hander would collect his second strikeout, nevertheless, also allowing two runs to ultimately decide the ballgame. The Barons could not find any sort of a response and sat down in four batters to close out the game.
Birmingham showed what could be to come with some top talent in the farm system being in the Magic City. However, the Barons also are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak.
The Barons will have two swings at breaking the losing streak on the same day on Wednesday, August 2nd, as they are making up a game from earlier in the season. Birmingham will toss out RHP Jonathan Cannon for Game 1 and have not yet determined who will start the second.
