August 2, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - Two late runs in game two of the day helped the Mississippi Braves (44-53, 10-18) split a doubleheader against the Montgomery Biscuits (51-47, 15-14) on Wednesday night at Trustmark Park.
Game One
The M-Braves attempted a seventh-inning comeback but came up short in a 3-1 loss.
Alan Rangel tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs. The right-hander surrendered five hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Mason Montgomery tied a season high with six shutout innings. The left-hander allowed just three hits.
The M-Braves struggled to get anything going until Montgomery exited after the sixth inning. In the seventh, Drew Lugbauer led off with a walk. Two batters later, Cal Conley picked up a base hit. Drew Campbell shot a base hit up the middle to score a run and make it 3-1. A double steal by Conley and Campbell put two runners in scoring position with the tying run on second base. However, back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
Campbell went 2-for-3 for his third straight multi-hit game.
For the second straight game, the M-Braves left the tying run in scoring position in the final inning.
Game Two
The M-Braves pulled off some late magic in game two. Two runs with two outs in the sixth inning led to a 3-2 win. The M-Braves snapped a streak of losing eight consecutive one-run games.
In the third, Conley smacked a double into the left-field corner. Conley then stole third base. Arden Pabst brought him in with a low liner up the middle to make it 1-0.
Conley extended his hitting streak to five games and has reached base in 15 of the last 16 games.
Hayden Deal put together four shutout innings in his fourth spot start of the season. The left-hander gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out a pair of batters. Deal improved to a 3.16 ERA in 42 2/3 innings this season.
The M-Braves trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth inning. Cody Milligan led off the inning with a double to the right-field corner. With two runners on, Lugbauer lined a ball into shallow left center, but Johan Lopez dove and made a spectacular grab for the second out. Jesse Franklin V came up next and laced an RBI single into right field. Franklin got caught in a rundown on the play, and Tyler Tolve took advantage of the opportunity and ran to home plate to score the go-ahead run.
Kyle Wilcox picked up the last two outs of the sixth and pitched a shutout inning in the seventh to earn his second win.
The fourth game of the series is on Thursday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Nolan Kingham (1-0, 0.00) will make the start Mississippi while RHP Cole Wilcox (2-8, 5.59) will start for Montgomery. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, MiLB First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
