New Jersey Jackals News Release

Quebec City, QUE - With the first Saturday of college football season underway, the Quebec Capitales put up a gridiron-like score on the New Jersey Jackals Saturday night, exploding for a 17-5 victory, the most runs allowed by New Jersey this season. Leading the way for the Capitales were a total of five home runs, including a grand slam by shortstop Ivan Naccarata and three home runs by all-star catcher Pete LaForest which tied a Can-Am League record.

Quebec controlled the game from the get-go, scoring five runs in the first three innings off Jackals starter Ted Serro. LaForest blasted a two-run home run in the first inning, before center fielder Goef Tomlinson laced an RBI-double in the second. With a runner on and nobody out in the third, LaForest took Serro (6-7) deep for a second time, with this shot clearing the scoreboard in right field.

The Jackals cut it to a 5-3 game at one points thanks to an RBI-double from shortstop Mike DeJesus in the third and then a two-run single in the fifth. That would be as close as things got for the remainder of the evening.

In the bottom of the fifth Serro loaded the bases before hitting left fielder Tony Lewis to force in a run. After right fielder Sebastien Boucher grounded into a fielder's choice that scored another run, Tomlinson crushed a fastball over the wall in right for a three-run home run, the final pitch that Serro would throw. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz would come on in relief - his second appearance since coming off the DL - and record the final out of the inning. Quebec would continue to pile it on though, scoring seven more runs in the sixth inning to set their final total.

After Pomeranz plunked Quebec third baseman Pat Deschenes, designated hitter Patrick Scalabrini brought him around to score with an RBI-double. After pinch hitter Patrick D'Aoust was walked, Tomlinson struck again with an RBI-single, his fifth RBI of the night. A subsequent walk would load the bases before Naccarata emptied them with the grand slam to right - his sixth home run of the season. The very next batter, LaForest, launched his record-tying third home run to right as well, capping the scoring for the Capitales.

The Jackals would plate two more runs in the game, a solo home run from right fielder Quinn Stewart in the seventh inning and a sacrifice fly RBI by Mike Scanzano, as the bats were kept in check by Quebec starter Michel Simard (9-6). The veteran right-hander allowed four earned runs on eight hits in his seven innings on the mound, while striking out seven batters and no issuing a walk.

All told, six different batters recorded an RBI for the Capitales. Tomlinson and LaForest led the way with five each and Nacarrata added four of his own.

New Jersey and Quebec will continue their series tomorrow night with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. The Jackals will turn to right-hander Nick Asselin while the Capitales will counter with right-hander Karl Gelinas. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com with the pre-game show starting 10 minutes prior.
