Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Shortstop Brandon Wood and Second Baseman Howie Kendrick were elected to the 2005 California League All-Star team.
Wood leads the league with 19 home runs and is tied for fourth in the league with 48 RBI. Wood also leads the league with 40 extra base hits and is second with a .636 slugging percentage. The All-Star short stop is in his third professional season and has played all three seasons with team mate Howie Kendrick who will join him in Frederick. Wood was a first-round draft pick (23rd overall) of the Angels in 2003 and continues to set a single season high with 19 home runs and is 15 RBI short of tying his season high of 64 RBI last season in Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League.
Kendrick (.373. 9 HR, 29 RBI) leads the league with his .373 average and 49 runs scored. On May 22 Kendrick suffered a strained left oblique and has been on the disabled list since. Kendrick carried a nine-game hitting streak onto the disabled list and at the time was leading in on-base percentage (.406). The All-Star second baseman started the season hitting safely in 17 of his first 18 games and has hit safely in 35 of his 40 games. Kendrick has the longest hitting streak on the Quakes club this season of 15 games (4/10 â 4/25).
Wood and Kendrick are the 40th and 41st players respectively in Quakes franchise history (1993-2005) to be elected to an All-Star team. Last season the California League defeated the Carolina League 5-2 as former Quakes pitcher Steven Shell picked up the victory with a performance of two scoreless innings. Michael Napoli and Erick Aybar also represented the Quakes last season in the mid-summer match-up at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.
The 2005 California League-Carolina League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, June 28 at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Maryland.
Rancho Cucamonga has 10 home games remaining before the All-Star Break (June 26-30) including tonight's home contest against the High Desert Mavericks.
