San Jose Giants News Release

Jesse Foppert tossed seven shutout innings on Thursday night as the San Jose Giants defeated the Lake Elsinore Storm 6-0 at Municipal Stadium. In front of 2,048 fans, Foppert and Jesus Reina combined on a four-hitter as the Giants salvaged the final game of the three-game series with the Storm. San Jose also snapped their season-high tying four-game losing streak with the win.

Foppert, who was making his first appearance of the season for the Giants, allowed just four hits in his seven inning stint. The 24-year old former major leaguer walked just two and struck out eight.

With San Jose leading 1-0, the Storm threatened in the top of the third as they loaded the bases on three singles with one out. But Foppert came back with consecutive strike outs of George Kottaras and Steve Baker, the #3 and #4 hitters in the Lake Elsinore lineup, to end the rally. Foppert then fired four straight no-hit innings to end his evening on the mound.

The Giants took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kevin Frandsen connected for a solo home run to left field. For Frandsen, it was his first homer of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, San Jose struck for three more runs to take a 4-0 lead. Travis Ishikawa led off with a single and then Jake Wald launched a home run to left field his sixth round-tripper of the year. Later in the inning, a two-out single from Eddy Martinez-Esteve brought home the third run of the inning.

San Jose added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Nate Schierholtz homered to right field. Then in the seventh, Todd Jennings led off with a single and scored two batters later on a Martinez-Esteve ground out.

Jennings extended his hitting streak to 19 games tied for the third longest in Giants franchise history with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Schierholtz (1-for-4, HR, RBI) also extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Frandsen (2-for-4, HR, RBI) and Wald (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) each chipped in with multi-hit games.

San Jose (38-23) reduced their magic number to five over Modesto (33-28) to clinch the First Half North Division title. The Nuts swept a doubleheader from Visalia tonight. The Giants lead over Modesto in the standings is five games with nine left to play in the half.
