San Jose Giants News Release

Four San Jose Giants Eliezer Alfonzo, Joe Bateman, Jesse Floyd, and Eddy Martinez-Esteve were named to the California League All-Star team this afternoon. The four players will represent the California League when they take on the Carolina League in this year¹s All-Star classic on Tuesday, June 28th at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Maryland.

The four players chosen were the most of any team in the California League. San Jose currently boasts the top record in the league at 38-23 entering play on Friday. The Giants have a five game lead over the Modesto Nuts in the North Division with just nine games to play in the First Half.

Alfonzo, a catcher, leads the Giants and is third in the league with a .359 batting average. The 26-year old also has top mark on the club in home runs with 12 to go with 39 RBI. Alfonzo is in his first year in the San Francisco organization after signing with the Giants last offseason as a free agent.

Bateman, a relief pitcher, has had a tremendous first half pitching in late inning situations. For the year, the 25-year old right-hander is 2-3 with a 1.96 ERA over 25 games. Bateman has recorded five saves and has a remarkable 39-to-5 strike out-to-walk ratio in 41 1/3 innings pitched.

Floyd, a starting pitcher, has recorded a 6-2 record and 2.97 ERA this season. The 24-year old right-hander has made 12 starts totaling 63 2/3 innings. Floyd has walked just 25 on the year to go with 60 strike outs. He¹s tied for second in the league in wins and third in ERA. Floyd originally signed with San Francisco as a non-drafted free agent in June, 2003 after a successful collegiate career at Lamar University.

Martinez-Esteve, San Jose¹s starting DH, has a .355 batting average, nine home runs, and 54 RBI. San Francisco¹s top draft pick last season (2nd round, Florida State University), Martinez-Esteve has excelled at the plate despite offseason shoulder surgery that prevents him from playing in the field. He¹s tied for fifth in the league in hitting, second in RBI, second in doubles (25), and first in on-base percentage (.461).

San Jose trainer Rob Knepper will also represent the California League at the All-Star game later this month.

2005 marks the ninth time the two premier ³High A² leagues have met in the mid-season. The California League won the 2004 contest defeating the Carolina League by a 5-2 score in a game hosted by Inland Empire.
