Modesto Nuts News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA (April 9th, 2013) -- Modesto's run of strong pitching continued on Tuesday night at Loan Mart Field, but the Nuts offense couldn't get in gear as they fell 1-0 to the Quakes in Rancho Cucamonga.
The game went scoreless into the bottom of the eighth inning, when Angelo Songco delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI single against Nuts reliever Geoff Parker (0-1).
Modesto (3-3) managed only four hits in the contest, and were sent down in order following a one-out triple from Brian Humphries with one out in the sixth. Rancho Cucamonga (4-2) reliever Matt Shelton (1-0) became the winning pitcher of record after the Quakes rally in the bottom of the eighth.
Michael Thomas struck out the side in a perfect ninth to record his third save in as many chances.
Both starters limited the opposition to four hits, with Nuts lefty Tyler Anderson going 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his second start of the year. Anderson did an outstanding job working through several jams, leaving a man at third base in the third and inducing inning-ending double plays to get out of trouble in the fourth and fifth. He gave way to Nick Schnaitmann in the sixth after surrendering a one-out single to O'Koyea Dickson. Schnaitmann worked through an inning and two-thirds before Parker took over at the start of the eighth.
Making his first start in a Quakes uniform, Duke von Schamann was also strong as he only allowed one man to reach scoring position in six innings of work.
With a 3-3 record so far on their Southern California road trip, the Nuts hope to take the series in Rancho Cucamonga in the final game from Loan Mart Field on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with RHP Blake Jensen set to take the hill for the second time this year. Jensen worked seven innings, while allowing just two runs in his debut with the Nuts last Friday against the 66ers. You can listen to all of the action online at ModestoNuts.com, with Alex Margulies providing the call.
