Modesto Nuts News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA (April 10th, 2013) -- Modesto wrapped a long seven-game road trip in Southern California with a 9-4 loss to the Quakes on Wednesday night. After splitting a four-game set with the 66ers, the Nuts dropped two-of-three to Rancho Cucamonga to finish with a 3-4 record to start the season.

Nuts starting pitcher Chris Jensen (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up four earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work. With the game tied 2-2 in the fourth, the Quakes plated the go-ahead run on an RBI double from catcher Chris O'Brien, and never looked back. Rancho would go on to score in six consecutive innings, finishing with a season high of 16 hits in the contest.

Modesto trailed 1-0 after the first, but quickly tied the game in the second as Jordan Ribera and Ryan Casteel opened the inning with back-to-back doubles against Quakes starter Gustavo Gomez. After Rancho retook a 2-1 lead in the third, Ribera hit a monster home run to lead off the fourth to knot the game at two.

Rancho Cucamonga pulled away with single runs in the fourth and fifth against Jensen, and added an unearned run against Kraig Sitton in the sixth. The Quakes then exploded for four runs in two innings against reliever Russell Brewer, including home runs by Ryan Mount and Noel Cuevas. Cuevas led the Quakes attack with four hits, while Mount totaled 3 RBI's.

After going quiet offensively through the middle and late innings, Modesto tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth against reliever Dan Coulombe. Harold Riggins led off with a double and scored on a fielder's choice from Casteel, and Trevor Story smacked a solo home run, his first of the season, to cap the Nuts scoring for the night.

With their first road trip in the books, the Nuts now get set for their home opener at John Thurman Field on Thursday night. Modesto will get a rematch of the California League Championship Series as they take on the Lancaster Jethawks in a four-game series, followed by a three-game set against the Visalia Rawhide starting on Monday. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, with festivities including face painters, a balloon artists, and post-game fireworks presented by tri counties bank.
