Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA (April 11th, 2013) -- The Nuts returned home to a packed John Thurman Field on Thursday night for their first home game of the season and fell to the Jethawks, 5-1, in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,214 fans.

After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, Modesto's (3-5) offense was silent the rest of the way as they managed only four hits in the contest.

Ben Alsup (1-1) suffered the loss in his second start, giving up two earned runs on seven hits as he failed to escape the fourth inning.

Modesto opened the game with a pair of singles by Tim Smalling and Tyler Massey, and took a 1-0 lead against starter David Rollins as an errant throw by catcher M.P. Cokinos brought Smalling home. But Rollins was able to strand a runner at third to finish the inning, and the Nuts didn't have many other chances the rest of the way.

Rollins (2-0) lasted five innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits, while striking out four and walking one. Tyson Perez came on in a planned relief effort in the sixth, and sent down all 12 batters he faced to rack up a four-inning save.

Lancaster's Rafael Valenzuela tied the game 1-1 on an RBI double in the second against Alsup, and Matt Duffy's RBI single in the third gave the Jethawks a lead they would not relinquish.

Geoff Parker was solid in relief of Alsup, giving up just one run across 3 2/3 innings. Lancaster added a pair of runs against Nelson Gonzalez in the eighth to pull away for good.

Having now lost three straight, the Nuts hope to get back in the win column as they continue with the second game of a four games series against the Jethawks on Friday. RHP Dan Winkler (1-0, 1.59) will make his second start of the year, opposite righty Mike Foltynewicz (0-0, 12.60) for Lancaster. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. You can listen to all of the action online at ModestoNuts.com, with Alex Margulies providing the call.
