Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - It didn't take another double-digit effort for the Quakes to earn their third straight victory against the San Jose Giants. Instead, it took solid pitching, timely hitting and a few lucky breaks to earn Rancho a 4-3 win on Monday night at The Epicenter and move into a tie for a wild card spot with the Lake Elsinore Storm.
For the first time this series, the Quakes managed to get a run on the board before the Giants, as Chris Jacobs hit a second-inning towering home run to left, his fifteenth of the season, making it a 1-0 game.
Rancho tacked on another in the third thanks to three straight hits from Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig and Austin Gallagher, with Gallagher driving in Pederson to make it 2-0. The three hitters went a combined 4-for-11 in Monday's game and 17-for-37 (.460) in the series against San Jose.
With the score tied at two in the bottom of the sixth, the Quakes caught a couple breaks. After Chris Jacobs drew a one-out walk, San Jose starting pitcher Kelvin Marte (2-1) left the game, replaced by Shawn Sanford. Jonathan Garcia reached on a fielding error by Sanford and then Pedro Baez singled to load the bases.
Then came the second break.
A Gabe Suarez grounder to third baseman Adam Duvall was sure to score one run, but a throwing error by the Giants' third baseman allowed Garcia to score behind Jacobs, giving the Quakes a 4-2 lead.
Ryan Acosta (4-1) followed Matt Guerrier in relief and gave Rancho five solid innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs while striking out five and walking one.
The Giants got a run in the seventh off of Juan Noriega, but Bret Montgomery pitched a scoreless eighth before giving way to Yimi Garcia who pitched around a lead-off Joe Panik single and a one-out Ricky Oropesa walk to earn his second save of the year.
The Quakes (66-67) are now tied with the Lake Elsinore Storm (66-67) for the second of two wild card spots in the South Division with seven games left to play. The Storm play the Giants for three games before concluding their season with four against the Inland Empire 66ers. Meanwhile, the Quakes will host the High Desert Mavericks for a three-game set before traveling to Bakersfield for the final four games of the regular season.
Tuesday night, the Quakes send Garrett Gould (4-9) to the hill against High Desert's Cameron Hobson (9-3) at 7:05pm. It's also the final Healthy R.C. Recycle Tuesday of the season! Bring 10 CRV-eligible bottles/cans to The Epicenter to receive a free club seat to Tuesday night's game. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or by going online to rcquakes.com Go Quakes!
