Quakes Edge Giants in Series Finale, 4-3

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - The San Jose Giants left 12 runners on base, including eight over the last four innings, in a 4-3 loss to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Monday evening at The Epicenter. Rancho Cucamonga took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth before holding off the Giants to earn the victory. San Jose drops three out of four games in the series.

Joe Panik (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) had three hits to lead the Giants offensive attack. Chris Lofton (2-for-3, 3B, RBI) and Carter Jurica (2-for-5) also finished two hits apiece in the loss.

With the score tied 2-2, the Quakes' Chris Jacobs began the sixth- inning rally by drawing a one-out walk. New pitcher Shawn Sanford then committed a fielding error on Jonathan Garcia's grounder to put runners on first and second before Pedro Baez singled to load the bases. Gabe Suarez was up next and he reached on a throwing error committed by Adam Duvall at third base. Suarez was credited with one RBI as Jacobs scored the go-ahead run while Garcia also came home on the play to make it 4-2.

San Jose immediately cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh, but couldn't draw even despite putting the tying run at third base with none out. Back-to-back singles from Lofton and Jurica started the frame before Panik delivered an RBI single to make it 4-3. Jurica advanced to third on the hit while Panik took second on the throw back to the infield. Duvall though grounded out to third base as the runners held and after Ricky Oropesa was intentionally walked to load the bases, Andrew Susac hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Giants threatened in the top of the eighth as Skyler Stromsmoe singled with one out before Bobby Haney drew a walk, however Lofton struck out and Jurica grounded out to end the inning.

In the ninth, Panik led off with a single while a one-out walk to Oropesa advanced the potential tying run to second base. Rancho Cucamonga reliever Yimi Garcia though settled down to register consecutive swinging strikeouts of Susac and Jarrett Parker to finish the game.

Ryan Acosta (4-1) was credited with the win for the Quakes after tossing five innings of long relief with two runs (both earned) and six hits allowed. He walked one and struck out five. Acosta entered the game to begin the top of the second after Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Matt Guerrier worked a perfect top of the first inning as part of a rehabilitation assignment. Garcia recorded his fourth save with a scoreless ninth inning.

San Jose starter Kelvin Marte (2-1) suffered his first loss despite matching a career-high with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Marte surrendered three runs (two earned) on seven hits while issuing just one walk.

Rancho Cucamonga took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Jacobs' leadoff home run to deep left center. The Quakes then added a run in the third as Joc Pederson doubled with one out, advanced to third on Yasiel Puig's single and scored on Austin Gallagher single.

The game remained 2-0 until the Giants tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. With one out Haney singled before Lofton delivered an RBI triple to deep center field. Lofton eventually scored the tying run on a two-out wild pitch.

San Jose put the potential go-ahead run at third base with two outs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but never managed to take the lead in the contest.

Notes: The Giants have lost three games in a row for the first time since July 5-11 when they dropped six straight ... San Jose committed 12 errors during the four-game series ... Both runs during the decisive sixth-inning rally for the Quakes were unearned ... The Giants have allowed 13 unearned runs over the last three games ... Sanford (0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO), Phil McCormick (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO), Josh Osich (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Drew Bowlin (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) all pitched out of the San Jose bullpen ... The Giants out-hit Rancho Cucamonga by an 11-9 margin ... San Jose finished 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position ... The Giants' overall record fell to 70-63 with seven games remaining in the regular season.

On Deck: The Giants continue their road trip on Tuesday evening with the opener of a three-game series at Lake Elsinore. First pitch at The Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Ryan Bradley (8-7, 4.94 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while the Storm are expected to counter with Burch Smith (9-6, 3.99 ERA).
