Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga,CA- Â The Quakes put an end to a no-hit bid by Lancaster in the eighth inning on Sunday afternoon, but fell a run shy in the conclusion of the series, 3-2. The loss is the first in the last six games at LoanMart Field for Rancho, as they fall a game back of first with just 13 to go in the first half.
After JetHawk's starter David Hill and reliever Heath Holder combined for seven no-hit innings, Hamlet Marte ended the bid and the shutout on a single swing.
Brian Baker entered from the bullpen in the eighth and walked Cody Thomas to begin the inning. Marte followed with a two-run home run on the first pitch of his at-bat, pushing the Quakes within a run at 3-2. Rancho would go on to leave the bases loaded in the eighth against new reliever Justin Lawrence.
Starting pitcher Andrew Sopko allowed two of three Lancaster runs when Roberto Ramos hit a two-run home run to right field in the first inning. Sopko would settle in, allowing an additional run on a ground out in the fourth, but worked through the seventh inning for his fifth quality start of the season.
On the mound for Lancaster, David Hill made his California league debut and first overall appearance since June of 2016. After hitting Zack McKinstry and walking Rylan Bannon to open the game, Hill (1-0) went on to retire 15 straight across five hitless innings and received the win.
Lawrence secured his fourth save of the year by pitching out of the bases-loaded jam in the eighth behind a pair of strikeouts. The right-hander faced the minimum in the ninth thanks to a game-ending double play.
Following the loss, the Quakes are now in a three-way tie for second place in the South division with Inland Empire and Lancaster, a game back of first-place Lake Elsinore, who completed a three-game sweep of Inland Empire.
On Tuesday, the Quakes begin a three-game series on the road in Lancaster, following a scheduled day off on Monday. Right-hander Dustin May (2-3, 5.14 ERA) is scheduled to make his seventh start of the year for the Quakes and be opposed by Matt Dennis (3-6, 6.28) of Lancaster. First pitch from the Hangar is set for 6:35 PM.
The Quakes return home to LoanMart Field on Friday, June 8th for the start of a three game series hosting the Inland Empire 66ers. Join the Quakes on Friday for a special Juntin Turner bobblehead giveaway, presented by Smile Generation.   Tickets are available online at rcquakes.com or by phone at 909-481-5000.
