Quakes Drop Fourth Straight, Swept by Mavs

Rancho Cucamonga, CA -- Rocky all the way around, the Quakes still managed to make it competitive, answering the Mavericks' six-run sixth inning with a four-run sixth of their own. Rancho scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it a 10-9 loss at LoanMart Field.

Devan Ahart lead off the bottom of the ninth with a single, followed by a double by Garrett Kennedy. Brandon Trinkwon walked to load the bases, and a 2-RBI single by Noah Perio put the Quakes within one run. Matt Beaty took one for a ride, but it was just short of the fence, ending the Quakes walk-off bid.

Rancho is just 14-21 this season in one-run games.

Starter Grant Holmes (L 8-4) went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out five Mavs, picking up his 100th strikeout of the season. Two of his three walks scored in the third inning on a fielder's choice and a base hit.

Luis De Paula relieved Holmes in the sixth, and promptly gave up back-to-back first-pitch home runs to Jairo Beras (14) and Jose Cardona (10). After two walks and an error, Luke Tender plated the third and fourth runs of the inning. Kevin Torres singled in the the fifth run, and a wild pitch plated the sixth, making it 10-2 High Desert.

The Quakes answered back in the home half, scoring four of their own. Erick Mejia lead off the sixth with a double, and scored on a fielder's choice by Noah Perio. Matt Beaty then blasted a 2-run shot, picking up RBIs 70 and 71 on the season. Two batters later, Johan Mieses knocked a solo shot to put the Quakes within four runs of the Mavs.

Kevin Brown pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing three baserunners and striking out two.

High Desert starter Reed Garrett (W 1-0) went 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out three, and allowing two home runs.

Beaty picks up three RBI, improving to 71, three back on the Cal League leader. Perio picks up three of his own, and now has four RBI in three games for the Quakes.

Garrett Kennedy picks up his 10th double, and Erick Mejia picks up his 13th.

The Quakes have not yet named a starter for game one against the Stockton Ports on Monday, while Stockton will send Brett Graves (5-8 5.11 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.

Monday, August 1st kicks off a seven game road-trip, with a three-game stop in Stockton and a four-game stop in High Desert. The Quakes are back at LoanMart Field on August 9th against Lake Elsinore.
