Bakersfield Blaze Game Recap 07-30-16: Bats Remain Sleepy in 5-3 Defeat
July 31, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The Bakersfield Blaze recent offensive woes continued, as the club scored the first run of the game on a passed ball before the Lancaster Jethawks capitalized on an error to score four, holding the Blaze in check for a 5-3 final on Saturday night in Bakersfield.
Art Warren got the start and worked two scoreless innings before coming out due to an innings limit.
And the Blaze led the game when he departed, but the era of good feelings would not last long. An error, a walk, a bunt and a passed ball gave the Blaze a 1-0 lead after two innings, but the Jethawks countered with a run on a sacrifice fly in the 4th, and four in a pivotal 5th.
Isaac Sanchez (L, 3-4) had no one to blame but himself. Sanchez plunked the Jethawks leadoff man after getting him into a no-balls, two strikes count, and promptly tossed a sacrifice bunt into the rightfield corner for a two-base error. Lancaster tied the game on a grounder, and after a flyball for out two (that should have ended the inning), the Jethawks rattled off three straight hits for three more runs and a 5-1 lead.
From there, Lancaster simply tossed it into cruise control. Akeem Bostick went only 4.0 innings in a wild start, but Kevin McKanna (W, 1-1) worked 4.1 innings to pick up the win.
The Blaze got a little help in the 9th to make the game more interesting when a Braden Bishop single was followed by an error to score a run. A sacrifice fly plated Bakersfield's third and final run, but Kevin Comer (S, 3) got the final two outs of the night on three pitches to finish the contest.
In all, Bakersfield drew five walks but mustered only four hits in another quiet offensive showing, and dropped their 10th in 13 games.
The series with Lancaster concludes on Sunday night on TMNT Cinema Day. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30pm. Fans wearing TMNT gear get in free!
Fans that cannot attend can listen to the action live at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.
