San Jose Giants News Release
MODESTO, CA - Nuts starting pitcher Ryan Castellani fired a complete-game four-hitter in a 4-1 Modesto victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at John Thurman Field. Castellani walked two, struck out six and threw only 102 pitches during his nine-inning masterpiece as the Nuts have now claimed two out of the first three games of the series against the Giants (55-51).
Miguel Gomez (2-for-4, 3B) had two of the four San Jose hits in the loss. The Giants' only run of the night came on a Jonah Arenado RBI groundout.
Modesto turned leadoff walks in the first, second and fourth innings into run-scoring rallies to build their lead against San Jose. Jose Morel started on the mound for the Giants and issued a walk to Wes Rogers to begin the bottom of the first. A wild pitch moved Rogers to second before a Forrest Wall groundout advanced the runner to third. Omar Carrizales then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center plating Rogers with the first run of the evening.
San Jose had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the second, but had a runner thrown out at the plate. With one out, Gomez blasted a triple to deep left center. Daniel Carbonell then flied out to shallow right. Gomez tagged at third on the fly ball, but was thrown out at home by Carrizales to end the inning.
The Nuts then scored twice in the bottom of the second to push their lead to 3-0. Morel walked Collin Ferguson to start the frame. Ferguson then stole second before Morel registered consecutive swinging strikeouts of Dom Nunez and Troy Stein. Max White then beat out a grounder to second for an infield single as Ferguson advanced to third. After White stole second, Emerson Jimenez hit a grounder to deep shortstop that was gloved by a diving T.J. Bennett. Bennett though had no play on any baserunner as Jimenez was safe at first with the infield hit and Ferguson scored to make it 2-0. Then with Rogers at the plate, Modesto executed a double steal as Jimenez swiped second while White stole home for a 3-0 advantage.
The Giants' only run of the contest came in the top of the fourth. Robbie Garvey led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a Dylan Davis groundout. Arenado then grounded out to third plating Garvey to bring San Jose to within 3-1.
The Nuts though got the run back in the bottom of the fourth. Morel walked Nunez to start the inning before a one-out bunt single from White put runners on first and second. Consecutive wild pitches uncorked by Morel then scored the run for a 4-1 Modesto lead.
Morel (2-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on four hits over four innings. The right-hander walked a career-high five and struck out five. Morel issued a leadoff walk in all four of his innings pitched. He also threw three wild pitches.
The Giants had only one hit and three total baserunners over the final five innings of the game against Castellani. Bennett walked with one out in the top of the fifth, but Castellani quickly retired the next two hitters to end the inning. Castellani threw only 48 pitches over the first five innings of his start.
In the top of the seventh with the score still 4-1, Gomez hit a one-out single, but was stranded when Carbonell popped out and Bennett grounded out. Castellani then breezed through a 1-2-3 eighth inning striking out two batters.
In the ninth, Garvey drew a leadoff walk and stole second, but Castellani notched back-to-back strikeouts of Davis and Arenado before Gomez flied out to end the game. Castellani retired 26 out of the 32 batters he faced.
