Quakes Can\'t Sweep, Fall 6-5 to Storm
August 13, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Lake Elsinore Storm prevented the Quakes from sweeping a three-game series on Thursday night, capitalizing on seven walks issued by Quakes' pitching, in a 6-5 victory at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
Allan Dykstra's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh put the Storm ahead to stay against Quakes' reliever Mike Piazza (1-1).
After the Quakes had tied the game at 5-5 on a Mike Trout two-run single in the top of the inning, Piazza walked Vince Belnome to open the seventh. After retiring Cody Decker, Piazza issued the Quakes' seventh walk of the game, putting runners at first and second with one out. Dykstra, who committed one of two errors that led to Trout's two-run single in the top of the inning, redeemed himself by singling home Belnome with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
The Quakes had the tying run aboard to open the eighth, but Dillon Baird struck out and Angel Castillo grounded out to end the inning.
Storm closer Brad Brach retired all three Quakes he faced in the ninth, setting a new Cal League record by recording his 38th save of the season.
Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee struggled with his command all night. In the first inning, he walked three hitters, including Jaff Decker with the bases loaded, forcing in a run to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.
The Quakes answered in the third, taking advantage of one of four Lake Elsinore errors to tie the game. Alberto Rosario's sac fly to center field plated Kevin Ramos, tying the game at 1-1 against Storm starter Nick Schmidt.
Baird ripped a two-run homer in the fourth, taking Eric Gonzalez deep for a 3-1 lead, his 11th round-tripper of the year.
Chaffee couldn't hold the lead in the fifth, as he loaded the bases, then on a 3-1 pitch, gave up a grand slam home run to Jaff Decker, as the Storm took a 5-3 lead.
Trout's two-run single plated a pair of unearned runs in the seventh against Storm reliever and eventual winner Gary Poynter (1-0).
Despite the loss for the Quakes (25-21, 64-52), they remain one game up on High Desert, who lost to Bakersfield on Thursday evening. Lake Elsinore climbs to within one game of the Quakes, tying High Desert for second place in the South Division Standings.
