Mavs Have 5-4 Loss Against Bakersfield

August 13, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavericks continued to struggle in their scoring opportunities and Bakersfield was able to push across a run in the ninth to hand the Mavs a 5-4 loss Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Tied 4-4 since the fourth, the Blaze were able to scratch out the winning run thanks to a couple of defensive miscues by the Mavericks in the ninth.

David Paisano led off the inning with a single to right field, and Johermyn Chavez bobbled the ball to allow Paisano to go second base.

Paisano then went to third on a sacrifice bunt. With the infield drawn in, Chris McGuiness sent a sharp ground ball right to Eddy Martinez-Esteve at first base.

Paisano took off on contact, but Martinez-Esteve froze once he fielded the ball. After some hesitation, he went to the base to get the force out, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Chavez led off the bottom of the inning with a single. With a chance to redeem himself, Martinez-Esteve bounced into a double play instead. Rich Poythress sent a deep drive to right field, but Miguel Velazquez made the catch right in front of the wall to end the game.

It was kind of an appropriate ending based on how the game had gone for the Mavs. They failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. For the series, they went 3-for-35.

The Blaze took the lead two batters into the game when Erik Morrison hit a home run.

The Mavs tied it in their first at bat. Edilio Colina sent a fly ball to deep left, but Cody Podraza could not make the catch while crashing into the wall. The ball rolled on the warning track, and Colina would circle the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Denny Almonte hit a traditional home run the next inning, a two- run shot out to center field to make it 3-1.

McGuiness collected an RBI single in the third to pull the Blaze within one, but the Mavs responded with a sac fly from Jake Shaffer to go back up by two.

Over the ensuing six innings, the Mavs put a runner in scoring position with one out or less and failed to score four times. They left 10 men on base, half in scoring position.

The Mavs had trouble against Bakersfield's bullpen yet again as well, as three relievers combined to toss four scoreless innings. Trevor Hurley (1-1) ended up with the win after throwing two innings. Fabio Castillo closed the door in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

Bobby LaFromboise (9-5) gave the Mavericks three effective innings of relief, but suffered a tough loss.

The Mavs lost five of six contests in the season series with Bakersfield, four by one run.

For the rest of the season, the Mavs will play only divisional opponents beginning with Lake Elsinore Friday night at 7:05 p.m. It's Midway Home Solutions Family Feast Night with all hot dogs and sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
