THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... return home this evening to begin a three-game series against the Modesto Nuts at Municipal Stadium. San Jose suffered a heartbreaking 11-9 loss to the host Lancaster JetHawks in their most recent game last Wednesday. The wild contest saw the Giants fail to hold an early 7-0 lead as the JetHawks eventually won on Jay Austin's two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Giants tied the game twice in the late-innings on Francisco Peguero's solo shot in the top of the eighth before James Simmons delivered a two-out, RBI single in the top of the ninth. Edwin Quirarte suffered the loss out of the San Jose bullpen after yielding three runs over the final 1 2/3 innings. Jose Flores hit a first-inning grand slam while Juan Perez, Wendell Fairley, Drew Biery and Joel Weeks finished with two hits each to lead the Giants offensive attack.

Media Coverage... The games on Friday and Saturday will be televised live on Comcast Hometown Network, Channel 104 with Joe Ritzo and Rocky Koplik handling the play-by-play and color commentary duties respectively. The entire series can also be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.

Road Trip Review... The Giants finished their six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. San Jose won two out of three at Bakersfield last weekend before managing just one victory in three games against the JetHawks. The Giants hit .305 as a team during the trip while Jose Flores (.500, 11-for-22, 3 HR, 11 RBI) was the top individual performer. San Jose is in the midst of a stretch (July 27-August 20) during which they'll play 16 out of 22 games away from Municipal Stadium.

Winning Ways... The Giants are 8-4 in their last 12 games since struggling to a 12-22 start in the second half.

Visiting Team Holds Edge In Giants-Nuts Season Series... This series marks the final regular season meeting between San Jose and Modesto. Entering tonight, the clubs have split 20 games this year. Modesto owns an 8-4 advantage in games played at Municipal Stadium while the Giants posted a 6-2 record this season at John Thurman Field. The teams haven't met since the first series of the second half (June 24-27) when the Nuts took three out of four games from host San Jose.

Jeremy Affeldt Joins Giants On Rehabilitation Assignment... San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt joined San Jose today on a rehabilitation assignment. Affeldt is recovering from a left oblique strain and last pitched with San Francisco on July 20. The 31-year old left-hander is 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA and three saves in 37 relief appearances this season.

Culberson Enjoys Modesto Pitching... Second baseman Charlie Culberson is hitting a team-best .380 (30-for-79) with seven doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI's in 19 games versus the Nuts this season. Overall, Culberson is tied with Johnny Monell for the team-lead in home runs (15) and RBI's (64).

San Jose Leads Division By Six Games... The Giants (65-51) currently own a six-game lead over the Visalia Rawhide (59-57) and a seven-game advantage over the Bakersfield Blaze (58-58) for the top overall record in the North Division. Home field advantage (hosting Game Five) in the North Division Series will be awarded to the team with the best overall record.

Perez Climbs Doubles Leaderboard... Outfielder Juan Perez has hit six doubles in his last 12 games increasing his season total to 34 - tops in the California League. Perez needs four more doubles to crack the San Jose Giants single-season top five list. Mark Leonard holds the club record with 50 doubles during the 1988 season.

Bullpen Standouts... Relief pitcher Jason Stoffel has converted his last 10 save opportunities dating back to July 7. In 13 relief appearances during that span, Stoffel possesses a 2.77 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 13 innings. His 22 saves this season are fourth in the California League and tops in the San Francisco Giants farm system. Ryan Verdugo boasts a 2.29 ERA and a 2-0 record in 13 games since joining the Giants from Augusta (Low-A) on June 30. Verdugo is limiting the opposition to a .143 batting average and has struck out 26 in 19 2/3 innings.

San Jose Wins League Record Sixth Consecutive First Half Title... The San Jose Giants won their California League record sixth consecutive first half North Division title this season. The Giants finished the first half with a 45-25 mark - eight games ahead of both the Modesto Nuts (37-33) and Visalia Rawhide (37-33). By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose secures a berth in the playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Giants have won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2009) in the last five seasons and will be attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time in franchise history this September. San Jose will open the playoffs on Saturday, September 11 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series. The previous league record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia).

Modesto Nuts... The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, enter tonight's action with an overall record of 57-59 - two games behind the Visalia Rawhide (59-57) for the wild card lead in the North Division. Modesto, losers of four in a row, is seventh in the league in batting average (.270) and tied for seventh in ERA (4.77).
