Clearwater Threshers News Release
Jose Pujols matched a season high with four hits, including his 16th home run of the season to lead the Clearwater Threshers to a 6-3 win and a series victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday morning.
Pujols finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and a two-run homer to pace the 13-hit attack for the Threshers (19-13) (51-49).
With 16 home runs on the season, Pujols is now just three away from matching the Threshers single-season high of 19, set by Art Charles in 2014 and matched by Kyle Martin in 2016. The all-time Clearwater record is 23, held by Ryan Howard for the Clearwater Phillies (2003).
McKenzie Mills (1-4) earned the win, limiting St. Lucie (12-19) (39-59) to just a run on six hits and a walk across six innings.
The Threshers edged ahead in the third inning, when Kevin Markham led off with a ground-rule double to right-center off starter David Peterson (2-5). Jose Gomez flied out to center, advancing Markham to third, and Mickey Moniak's sacrifice fly plated Markham with the game's first run.
St. Lucie pulled even in the fourth, when Wuilmer Becerra led off with a triple, and scored on a Quinn Brodey RBI grounder.
The tie held into the sixth.
Moniak got things going with a single to right, and with one down, Pujols drove a double to right-center to plate Moniak and give the Threshers the lead. An out later, Martin reached on an error that brought home Moniak, and Raul Rivas doubled in Pujols to make it 3-1.
Markham opened the seventh inning with his second double of the day, and Gomez singled to center to put runners at the corners. Moniak delivered another sac fly, scoring Markham to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Mets pulled to within one in the bottom half, bringing home a pair against reliever Grant Dyer. Dale Burdick tripled and scored on a Raphael Gladu single, and Michael Paez followed with a sac fly to center, but Gladu was doubled off first to end the inning with Clearwater up, 4-3.
The Threshers grabbed some breathing room in the ninth after Matt Pobereyko took over, as Henri Lartigue doubled, and Pujols unloaded a two-run shot to center to increase the lead to 6-3.
Addison Russ worked a perfect bottom of the ninth, earning his fourth save for Clearwater.
The Threshers will head home for game one of a four-game set against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, with first pitch at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The final three games of the series will be played at Publix Field in Lakeland. Ramon Rosso will take the hill in the opener against Franklin Perez, and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbasell.com starting at 6:45 p.m.
