Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs and the Oshawa Generals met up in Oshawa on Thursday as the make-up for last Sunday's postponed game due to weather. The fans in Oshawa were treated to an exciting game that saw Kingston come from behind for a 5-4 shootout win for their sixth win in seven games. The win ties them with Mississauga for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 18 points. Christian Propp was a star in goal tonight making 40 saves on 44 shots.
The Generals had been struggling coming in with a 2-3 record in their last five. Former Frontenacs forward Brett Neumann came into the game on a five-game point streak (4G,3A) with the Generals winning all three previous meetings. Oshawa import selection Oliver Suni led OHL rookies with 23 points with Frontenacs Shane Wright in third with 20.
For Kingston, it's been a great turnaround after struggling to start the season. Shane Wright scored his first OHL goal in Oshawa on Sep 29 during a 4-1 loss and entered Thursday's game on a six-game point streak (6G,3A) while Dustin Hutton had a seven-game streak (1G,7A).
The first period saw the Generals control puck possession with Christian Propp holding strong in the crease making 13 saves during the first half of the period. Kingston would take two penalties in the second half of the frame and Oshawa made them pay. With Francesco Arcuri off for slashing, Ty Tullio scored at 13:44 making it 1-0 on the first powerplay. He wired a one-timer past Propp on the 14th shot of the period after sustained offensive zone time. The goal marked the Teddy Bear Toss in Oshawa as the bears rained down with the Generals crowd celebrating the special moment.
Allan McShane put Oshawa up 2-0 at 15:23 on the second powerplay with Jordan Frasca in the box. After a point shot by Giovanni Vallati was saved, the rebound went to Noel Serron who quickly touched a pass to McShane for the two-goal lead heading into the first intermission. The 20 shots on Propp and 18 saves marked the most for a Kingston goalie in a period this season.
The Frontenacs would need to come out hard in the second period and just 26 seconds in Dawson Baker brought Kingston within one tipping a Jakob Brahaney shot for a 2-1 score. It was Baker's seventh and second versus Oshawa this year with Maddox Callens also drawing an assist.
With Kingston facing their third penalty of the game, Oshawa would catch a break going up 3-1 at 4:49. After Giovanni Vallati's point shot hit Nick King high, the Frontenacs defender went down obviously stunned. The puck deflected off King straight to McShane who backhanded a shot past Propp for his second of the game. King, thankfully, would be okay on the unfortunate play for Kingston.
After Kingston couldn't connect on their first powerplay, including a huge breakaway save by Propp on a shorthanded chance by Oshawa, Shane Wright scored his 12th on the second man-advantage for Kingston making it a one-goal game again at 3-2. The goal gave Wright the powerplay goal lead (5) for rookies and extended his point streak to seven games (7G,5A). Brahaney added his 17th assist to lead Kingston in helpers with Frasca also credited on the play.
Some of the momentum gained from the goal was snubbed by two more penalties in the middle of the period. A too-many-men penalty at 9:21 was followed by a Lucas Rowe tripping call at 11:39 but again Propp stood strong in net to continually keep his team within striking distance including a huge save off a Nico Gross slap shot that caused him a little discomfort.
Oshawa went up 4-2 at 16:58 on Tullio's second of the game on a nice shot beating Propp over the left shoulder and almost went up by three minutes later, but Propp made a "save of the week" candidate off two chances by Kyle MacLean and Neumann within seconds keeping it a two-goal game headed into the 2nd intermission.
The third saw Oshawa come out strong forcing Propp into some more saves off high-quality scoring chances but Kingston would go on their 3rd powerplay of the game and Nick King would made it 4-3 at 6:45 with his third of the year. After a Wright pass, King fired a wrist shot that beat MacLean low bringing Kingston within one for the third time.
Kingston would get a golden opportunity to tie the game when Oshawa would take four penalties including a four-minute high-sticking call in just over two minutes of playing time. Just before the two-man advantage ended for Kingston, Arcuri finished a beautiful passing play to tie the game 4-4 at 14:48. After King and Wright exchanged passes at the blueline, Wright would feed a cross-ice pass to Arcuri who made no mistake for his third of the year with a wicked one-timer. Wright's third point on the play tied him with Suni for the rookie point lead, and with Wisdom for the team lead (23).
The game would head to overtime, which solved nothing meaning a shootout would be needed to decide the extra point.
With Propp making the first save on Tullio in the shootout, Nick Wong gave Kingston the 1-0 lead beating MacLean on a low shot. When Propp stoned McShane as Oshawa's second shooter, it was Arcuri burying the winner past MacLean giving Kingston the 5-4 shootout win. Arcuri has now scored all three times he's been in a shootout and leads all OHL rookies.
Kingston is back in action tomorrow night at the Leons Centre at 7 PM. It's the first game of a home-and-home with Peterborough Petes in what will be a special night with Chris Clifford being honoured and the team dressing in Kingston Canadians colours. Tickets are available at the Frontenacs box office or Ticketmaster.ca.
