Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - A pair of pitchers stole the show as Winston-Salem and Potomac split a doubleheader on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Nationals got a complete game from Adam Carr in taking the opener 3-1, before Dylan Axelrod dominated in a 2-0 Dash victory in the nightcap.
In game one, the Dash plated their lone run when they tallied three consecutive singles against Carr to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Greg Paiml registered the run-scoring hit as he brought Joe Persichina across the plate to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead. Carr would not surrender another hit over the final four innings.
Potomac answered back in the top of the fourth inning when Tim Pahuta delivered an RBI sacrifice fly that knotted the score at one. The Nationals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Boomer Whiting lined a two-out solo home run off Dash starter Levi Maxwell. It was just the third long ball of the year for Whiting, but it proved to be the winning run.
The Nationals took advantage of some aggressive base-running to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Devin Ivany led off with a double against reliever Hector Santiago. One out later with Aaron Seuss at-bat, a passed ball skipped through the legs of catcher Logan Johnson. Ivany advanced to third as the ball rolled to the backstop and when Santiago failed to cover the plate, Ivany raced home to put Potomac in front 3-1.
Carr (2-4) was superb on the mound as he tossed a complete game four-hitter and held the Dash to a run. He did not walk a batter and earned his second win of the season. Maxwell (4-13) pitched well as he tossed five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, but suffered his league-leading 13th loss of the season.
Axelrod (1-1), who recently signed as a free agent and making his second start for the Dash, was in complete control on the mound in game two. He held Potomac to three hits in six shutout frames and struck out a season-high eight batters to earn his first Carolina League win.
Once again, the Dash offense struck first with a pair of runs off spot-starter Patrick McCoy in the first inning. Leadoff hit Dale Mollenhauer hit an infield pop fly that was dropped by third baseman Greg Veloz for a one-base error. Mollenhauer stole second base and after Tyler Kuhn walked, Brent Morel lined an RBI single into right field. Seth Loman followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly that scored Kuhn to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.
That would be all the offense the Dash would need thanks to the stellar performances of Axelrod and Dash closer Santo Luis, who struck out the side in order in the seventh to collect his 11th save of the season. McCoy (0-2) only lasted three innings and allowed two runs (none earned) on three hits with three strikeouts to garner the loss for the Nationals.
The Dash and Nationals continue this series with game three on Wednesday night at Wake Forest baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Anthony Carter (11-5, 3.95), the league-leader in the wins to the mound. Potomac is expected to turn to LHP Tom Milone (9-4, 3.13). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
The Dash will host Thirsty Thursday at Wake Forest Baseball this week on August 20. Fans can take advantage of discounted beverages including beer for $2 and soda for just $1. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
