Profar, Indians Too Much for AquaSox

EVERETT, Wash. "" The Everett AquaSox clawed back from an early three-run deficit, but couldn't come up with clutch two-out hits to pull out a win. Juremi Profar collected three of them on his own, including the eventual game-winner, in leading the Spokane Indians to a 10-4 win on Pink at the Park night at Everett Memorial Stadium Friday.
Profar, the younger brother of Texas Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar, was 3-3 and had two-out RBI singles in the first, third, and fifth innings that accounted for four Indians runs. The AquaSox, meanwhile, wearing bright pink jerseys to raise breast cancer awareness, continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, going 1-10, 0-4 with two outs, and stranding eight. The loss is the Frogs' sixth straight at home and assures that Everett will remain winless in its first four series, regardless of Saturday's result.
Spokane jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the first against "ËSox starter Dan Altavilla. A leadoff walk to Eduard Pinto and singles by Seth Spivey and Jose Trevino loaded the bases before Marcus Greene drew a walk to force in Pinto with the first run. Two batters later, Profar lined a two-out, two-run single that scored Spivey and Trevino to make it 3-0.
The AquaSox chipped into the lead over the next two innings. In the home half of the first, Austin Cousino singled, stole second and third, and scored Everett's first run on Sheehan Planas-Arteaga's sacrifice fly. With the base hit, Cousino has hit safely in 10 of his first 12 pro contests. In the second, with runners at the corners, Luis Caballero lined a soft single that just eluded the glove of diving center fielder Zach Cone to plate Brett Thomas and bring the "ËSox within one at 3-2.
From there the game turned into an offensive showcase, mostly by Spokane. Profar got a run back for the Indians in the third with another two-out RBI single, scoring Marcus Greene to make it 4-2. But the Frogs drew even in the bottom of the inning. After two quick outs, Phillips Castillo singled and Thomas drilled a fastball from Spokane starter Andrew Barnett over the wall in right to tie the score at 4-4. The two-run shot was Thomas' first homer of 2014.
The Indians would pull ahead again in the fifth when Profar struck once more. With two outs and Luke Tendler on second, the Curacao native lined a single to center to put Spokane ahead for good at 5-4. The Indians added insurance runs in the sixth and ninth to provide the final margin.
Everett had chance to at least draw within striking distance in the bottom half of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Cousino and Chris Mariscal struck out swinging to end the inning. The AquaSox would have just one more base runner.
Neither starter factored into the decision Friday. Altavilla labored through three innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Barnett lasted only four innings, yielding four runs on seven hits before giving way to Nick Dignacco (2-0), who worked two scoreless frames to earn the win. Rigoberto Garcia (0-2) took the loss. He allowed three runs in five innings out of the bullpen, striking out eight and walking three.
Spokane out hit Everett 13-10. In addition to Profar, Spivey and Trevino led the Spokane attack with two knocks apiece. Adam Martin, Mariscal, and Caballero each had two hits for the "ËSox. Toby Demello entered the game as a defensive replacement for Martin in the top of the seventh after the latter appeared to hurt himself during his at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With a double in the fifth, Mariscal extended his hitting streak to eight games. The AquaSox struck out eleven times as a team.
Everett (4-11) will attempt to avoid a series sweep at the hands of Spokane (12-2) in the finale of the three-game set Saturday. First pitch is at 7:05 as Jeffeson Medina (0-1, 6.75) goes for the "ËSox against the Indians' Nick Gardewine (3-0, 4.80).
