The Boise Hawks management was smart to save their post-game fireworks show for the second game of their series with Hillsboro.
One night after the Hawks produced a dud, they lit up the Hops 11-1 Friday night to even the three game series at a game apiece.
In a complete 180-degree turn from the previous night, the Hops were held to just two hits and an unearned run by three Boise pitchers, led by starter Trevor Clifton (1-0), who faced one over the minimum over six innings to record his first victory of the season.
Jordan Parr had the only hit off the right-handed Clifton, a seeing-eye single to right field with one out in the third inning. Parr was promptly erased on an inning-ending double play, one of two turned behind Clifton in the first three innings.
Boise first baseman Danny Canella greeted Hops starting pitcher Scott Schultz (0-1) with a solo home run to left-center field leading off the second inning, the first earned run allowed by Schultz in three starts and eight innings pitched. Canella added an RBI double his next time around in the fourth inning when the Hawks scored two more times to take a 3-0 lead. Schultz exited the game after four innings, charged with three earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk.
The Hops cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth after Tyler Baker walked, then went to third base on an errant pickoff throw from Clifton that sailed high over the head of the 5-11 Canella. Pedro Ruiz followed with a grounder to short that nearly got a piece of the field umpire, scoring Baker with the only Hillsboro run of the game.
It got ugly late for Hillsboro as the Hawks took advantage of two errors and a strikeout wild pitch that scored two runs in the seventh, then the first six batters reached base in the eighth inning on four walks, a hit batter and a two-run single by Jeffrey Baez.
One night after outhitting the Hawks 14-5 and not walking a batter, the Hops were outhit 10-2 and gave up nine free passes along with a hit batter.
It was Hillsboro's first game of the year without right fielder Todd Glaesmann in the lineup. Glaesmann, acquired by the Diamondbacks in an offseason trade with Tampa, was promoted to AA Mobile after going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in his final game with the Hops. The Waco, Texas native departs as the Northwest League's leading hitter (.404) after leading the Hops in hits, runs, doubles, extra-base hits and slugging percentage.
Hillsboro will have little time to dwell on what went wrong. Following an early wake-up call, the Hops and Hawks will hit the field at 10:00 a.m. local time for the rubber match of the series.
