The Calgary Vipers bullpen retired ten straight batters to allow their offense to comeback late and defeat the Victoria Seals 7-6 before 2305 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Trailing 6-4 in the seventh inning Kevin Price hit a game tying home run and the Vipers took the lead in the eighth frame on a throwing error by the Seals. The game featured five different ties, Victoria leading on three separate occasions, and Calgary holding the lead twice as well. With the win the Snakes move back to two and a half games ahead of the Seals for first place in the North Division at 23-13 with nine games remaining. Overall the Vipers' record is 46-33 on the Golden Baseball League season.
Calgary got a dominant performance from four arms out of the bullpen starting in the sixth inning with Rob Naegele retiring the only batter he faced. In the seventh Jorge Vasquez pitched a one-two-three inning with a strikeout, Monte Mansfield (4-3) recorded the win with a three-up, three-down eighth, and Claudio Galva (19) tied for the league lead in saves with a one-two-three ninth frame including a punch out.
Victoria opened up the scoring in the second inning when Tim Rodriguez singled, Brian Rios collected a run batted in double, and Colin Moro singled for a RBI and a 2-0 advantage.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the frame with Julio Ramirez and Kevin Price singled, a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, and Luis Taveras drove both in to tie the game at 2-2 with a base hit.
The Seals quickly took back the lead at 3-2 in the third as Terrance McClain singled and scored on another Rios RBI double.
The Vipers again answered in the bottom of the inning when Jorge Mejia led off with his fifth home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3.
Calgary grabbed their first lead at 4-3 in the fourth frame as Drew Miller singled, advanced to second base on a ground out, and scored on a Caonabo Cosme RBI base hit.
Victoria quickly tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth when Wilver Perez doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a McClain RBI groundout.
The Seals took their third lead of the night at 6-4 in the sixth inning as with two outs Moro walked, Matt Edgecombe reached after a wild pitch on a strikeout, and Isaac Hess hit a two-strike pinch-hit two-run double.
The Vipers tied the game for a fifth time in the game at 6-6 in the seventh frame when Brent Metheny doubled and Kevin Price clubbed a two-out, two-run homer for his sixth long ball of the season.
Calgary took their second lead at 7-6 in the eighth as Taveras singled, Cosme reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base, and with two outs scored as Jonny Kaplan reached on a throwing error by third baseman Rios.
The Vipers' final regular season home-stand at Foothills Stadium continues with a first-place showdown against the Victoria Seals on Saturday August 28th at 5:05 PM MDT for Winnipeg Night and Sunday August 29th at 1:35 PM MDT for Fan Appreciation Day.
