Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Toros took the first of a four game series against the Edmonton Capitals 6-5 Thursday night as starting pitcher Albie Lopez tied the team high in wins after earning his 6th victory of the season.

Lopez began the game by working out of his 1st inning bases loaded jam by striking out two straight to get out of the inning unscathed.

Opposing starter Alexander Francisco was not as fortunate, allowing 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st. An RBI single to right by LF Lino Garcia that was later followed by a 2 RBI single up the middle by 3B Wally Backman Jr. helped give Tucson the early 4-0 lead.

Edmonton would score the next 4 runs of the game. 3B Alex Prieto and SS Enrique Cruz both hit their 5th home runs of the year as Prieto's solo-home run came in the 2nd inning while Cruz's 2-run homer came in the 5th inning. LF Larry Bigbie smacked his 15th home run of the year in the 5th inning as well. His deep solo shot struck off the batter's eye in centerfield to tie the game up at 4 apiece.

The Toros regained the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning with an RBI single up the middle by 1B Cristobal Santana that put them up 5-4. Tucson added one more insurance run in the 6th inning on a sacrifice fly by CF Josh Womack. The bonus came in handy after Edmonton cut the lead down to one run in the 8th inning.

Tucson held on for the 6-5 win as Closer Emiliano Fruto shut down the Capitals to earn his 17th save on the season, giving Lopez his 6th win on the season to tie for the team lead.

The Toros will play the second of the 4-game series against the Edmonton Capitals on Fireworks Friday tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
