Edmonton Capitals News Release

Tucson, AZ - A four-run first inning paved the way for the Tucson Toros to take down the Edmonton Capitals 6-5 in the opening game of their four-game series on Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field.

Caps starting pitcher Alexander Francisco gave up all six of the Toros' runs over 6.1 innings to take the loss, with four coming in the first inning and singles given up in the fifth and sixth. Left fielder Lino Garcia did the most damage for the Toros, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

Despite falling behind by four runs early, the Caps battled their way back to put five on the board and make it close. Their biggest inning was the fifth, as they scored three times. Short stop Enrique Cruz extended his hitting streak to 27 games, going 1-for-5 with a two-run home run. Left fielder Larry Bigbie and third baseman Alex Prieto also slugged home runs for the visitors.

With the slim loss, the Caps dropped to 18-17 in the second half of the Golden Baseball League season. Fortunately for them, the first-place Calgary Vipers fell 11-4 to the Victoria Seals to keep the North Division standings tight. Calgary is still in first at 22-13, while Victoria is 1.5 games back at 20-14. The Chico Outlaws hold down third at 17-16, putting him them four games out, and the Caps are in fourth, also four games behind the first-place Vipers.

The Caps and Toros tangle three more times this series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all at 7 p.m. Edmonton returns home on Tuesday to start a potentially huge three-game series with the Seals, as they will likely have to win all three games to keep their playoff hopes alive.
