Victoria Seals Cruise in Calgary

Calgary, AB - Kicking off a key four-game series against the Calgary Vipers at Foothills Stadium on Thursday night, the Victoria Seals were in search of a sixth straight win against their Alberta rivals in game one. In a battle of respective aces, the Seals turned to Isaac Hess (4-3) on the mound while the Vipers sent Mac Suzuki (1-1) to the hill.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jorge Mejia singled before Guillermo Reyes reached on a fielder's choice, and later scored on an RBI base hit courtesy of Julio Ramirez for a 1-0 lead.

The Seals bounced back with two runs in the third with the help of a walk to Colin Moro, a base hit from Matt Edgecombe, and a game-tying single from Wilver Perez. Two pitches later, Henry Calderon gave put the Seals up 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to right field.

After Tim Rodriguez led off the fourth with a solo home run, Victoria went up by four on the back of a double from Hess, a single off the bat of Perez, and a two-run single from Calderon to stake a 5-1 advantage.

Continuing to cruise in the sixth inning, the Seals padded their lead with back-to-back doubles from Matt Kavanaugh and Colin Moro before Edgecombe singled, and Perez plated another pair with a base hit for a 8-1 lead.

Answering back with three runs in the seventh, the Vipers made it a game with three straight singles from Kevin Price, Mejia, and Reyes to load the bases, ahead of a two-run single from Brent Metheny and a run-scoring double play ball for a 8-4 score through seven frames.

Victoria polished off the game in the ninth, however, Brian Rios reached on a fielding error, and later scored on a wild pitch followed by walks to Kavanaugh, Moro, and Edgecombe who to set up an infield error to Reyes that gave the Seals a seven-run lead. With Brandon Villafuerte on to retire the side in the bottom of the frame, Victoria claimed an 11-4 in game one.

Isaac Hess claimed his fifth win of the season with six strong innings on the mound, while Mac Suzuki was tagged with the loss in the series opener. Wilver Perez and Henry Calderon combined for six RBI's in a winning effort, while
