Preview: FC Tulsa vs. San Antonio FC - Sunday, September 3
September 2, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
TULSA - On Sunday evening, Blair Gavin and FC Tulsa will call Hurricane Soccer Stadium at the University of Tulsa home when it hosts San Antonio FC. The match kicks off at 8 p.m. CT on the CW Tulsa and on ESPN+.
Long time Tulsa soccer fans are no stranger to the University of Tulsa confines dating back to when the NASL Tulsa Roughnecks were housed at Skelly Stadium from 1978-1984. The club's last match at Skelly to bookend its NASL tenure took place 14,239 days prior to Sunday on September 8, 1984.
FC Tulsa will aim to couple the new venue with a fresh start in the new month as the club finds itself amid a six-match winless streak, but only one point out of a playoff position. A win over San Antonio and a loss or draw by Detroit City at the hands of Memphis 901 FC on Saturday night would see FC Tulsa back in the postseason picture.
Young faces continue to appear in Blair Gavin's Starting XI as of late with 16-year-old Nate Worth making back-to-back starts for FC Tulsa, his first two starts of the season, in each of the club's last two matches. In addition, 18-year-old Angel Bernal earned his first start of the season last Saturday at New Mexico United.
Just seven regular season matches remain for FC Tulsa in 2023, only three of which will be played on home soil. The first two 2023 USL Championship Playoffs births could potentially be clinched in Week 26 as the playoff picture continues to grow clearer, applying pressure to every club in the league with the end of the season drawing near.
There is still time for FC Tulsa to make an end-of-season surge, beginning Sunday night.
SCOUTING SAN ANTONIO FC
San Antonio FC is in the midst of a war for the Western Conference title, exchanging blows with Sacramento Republic FC at the top with seven matches remaining in its regular season schedule. The late addition of Burkinabé defender Trova Boni earlier this week sees San Antonio searching to debut the loanee from Portuguese side Belenenses SAD to solidify its backline over the final stretch.
Undefeated in its last seven matches, San Antonio leads the USL Championship with 49 goals in 2023, resulting in a league-best +23 goal differential. Tani Olyuwaseyi individually has something to say, leading the USL-C with 14 goals in 17 appearances this season.
KING CABBAGE CONCERT
Gates will open two hours earlier on Sunday evening than they typically do at ONEOK Field. Fans may begin to enter the stadium at 6 p.m. where King Cabbage Brass Band will play a free one-hour set for fans from 6:15-7:15 p.m.
PARKING/ENTRY
Fans may utilize parking lots throughout the University of Tulsa campus and street parking where available. Three entrances to the stadium will be accessible for fans as well - the main north gate, the east gate, and the southwest gate.
HOW TO WATCH
The match will be broadcasted locally on The CW Tulsa and streamed nationally on ESPN+.
